The NX is calm and composed, a welcome refuge from traffic chaos. If we were looking for a luxury compact SUV for long trips and stress-free commutes, the NX would be on our shortlist. We’d still like a bit more sound insulation, though.
The NX 350 and NX 350h are the most popular grade choices. The hybrid (NX 350h) makes 240 horsepower, while the NX 350 delivers 275 hp. For reference, the Genesis GV70 2.5T has 300 hp. The NX 350 hits 60 mph in 6.6 seconds, while the NX 350h takes 7.2. Neither is thrilling, but both feel quick enough in real-world driving.
The NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid is the powerhouse of the lineup, with 302 hp and the ability to cover most daily errands on electricity alone. If you live in hilly terrain, you’ll appreciate the extra muscle, and you won’t miss the discontinued NX 250’s modest 203 hp. The NX 450h+ does the zero-to-60-mph dash in 6.0 seconds, according to Lexus.
Fuel Economy
The NX 350 returns a manufacturer-estimated 24 mpg combined, solid for the class. The NX 350h hybrid impresses with a combined fuel economy of 40 mpg. The NX 450h+ PHEV offers 37 miles of electric-only range and 36 mpg combined once the battery depletes. Keep it charged overnight or at work, and you’ll run on electricity most of the time.

Inside, the NX sticks to what Lexus is best known for: quality materials, solid assembly, and plenty of standard features. The SUV format brings a higher driving position, and the front seats are especially comfortable. Storage is generous, and while rear legroom (36.1 inches) isn’t class-leading, it’s adequate. The Genesis GV70 offers about an inch more.
Cargo space is 22.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 46.9 cubic feet with them folded — and that’s true even for the NX 450h+ PHEV. Some rivals, like the GV70, offer more room, but the NX makes good use of its space.

The previous base model, the NX 250, is gone for 2026, leaving the NX 350 as the entry point. The NX 350 packs a 2.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 275 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic. It’s the sweet spot for most buyers, delivering solid punch without punishing fuel economy.
The NX 350h hybrid combines a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder with electric motors that net 240 hp and stellar efficiency. Lexus says it gets up to 40 mpg combined in front-wheel-drive form. All-wheel drive is available for those who face slippery conditions, and the hybrid’s smooth, quiet character makes it a natural fit for city and suburban life.
At the top of the NX lineup, the NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid brings 302 hp and an EPA-estimated 37 miles of electric-only range. Keep it charged, and you’ll cover most daily driving without burning a drop of gas. Not every rival offers a hybrid, and even fewer have a PHEV option.
<h3>4-Year/50,000-Mile Warranty</h3>
Lexus backs the NX with a 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty and a 6-year/70,000-mile powertrain warranty. Hybrid components and batteries are covered for eight years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. The first scheduled service is complimentary, valid for up to one year or 10,000 miles.

While 2026 crash test results haven’t been released, we expect similar results. Every NX comes with a robust suite of standard driver-assist features: forward collision warning with pedestrian detection and intersection assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure alert with steering assist, and lane-tracing assist to help keep you centered.

The NX lineup drops the NX 250, making the NX 350 the new entry point. The NX 350h hybrid also now offers a front-wheel-drive (FWD) option, getting an estimated 40 mpg combined. A new Premium trim joins the NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid range, lowering the cost of entry for plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) buyers. The F SPORT Handling package is now available across all powertrains, and new colors, such as Infrared and expanded Ultra White, add more visual flair. All NX 450h+ models now include dual charging cables for Level 1 and Level 2 charging.

The Nissan Sentra compact sedan enters an all-new generation for the 2026 model year. Although there are no changes under the hood, an aesthetic makeover, updated technology, and the return of the premium SL trim are enough to make the humble Sentra feel truly new. A few highlights of the redesign include a Google built-in infotainment system with a 12.3-inch display, the Nissan ProPilot Assist system, and some upscale options like quilted seating, a head-up display, and a wireless charging pad.

Every 2026 Nissan Sentra is powered by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine rated at 149 horsepower and 146 lb-ft of torque. The output is sent to the front wheels through a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).

The spunky, wonderfully appointed 2026 Mazda CX-30 brings sports car-like performance to the subcompact SUV class.

The CX-30’s standard 2.5-liter engine is the most powerful base unit in the subcompact SUV class, generating 186 hp and enabling a standstill-to-60 mph dash in a relatively quick eight seconds. This is the more popular engine in the CX-30 lineup and the sensible choice for most buyers.
We’re convinced Mazda had Tennessee’s twisting Tail of the Dragon stretch of road in mind when it engineered this spirited little SUV. The same flow, feel, fun, and fleetness found in other Mazda vehicles are all here in the CX-30. We believe anything better than this probably has a BMW badge and a price to match. The steering is wonderfully responsive, and the suspension tuning is pitch-perfect. Granted, the suspension may feel somewhat stiff to more comfort-oriented drivers, but that’s a trade-off we would make for such handling dynamics.
The other engine on offer is a 250-hp turbocharged 4-cylinder unit. This intensifies the CX-30’s already enjoyable driving dynamics while hitting 60 mph in about six seconds. We think the base engine is quick enough, plus it&#8217;s more affordable and more efficient — but it’s good to have the choice.
Fuel Economy
We argue that the fuel economy of the CX-30’s base engine is perfectly acceptable, achieving 29 mpg in combined city/highway driving. That’s matched by the Kia Seltos (with all-wheel drive). They both outdo the all-wheel-drive Honda HR-V. The CX-30’s turbocharged engine manages a still-respectable 25 mpg combined.

Sporty Wrapper

We like that the CX-30 follows the same exterior design approach as the rest of the company’s SUVs. That’s fine by us. When a core design works this well, why change the classy lines, sleek surfaces, and elegant proportions?
Mazda did freshen the CX-30’s nose and added the new Aire Editions with blacked-out accents and wheels for 2026.

Ergonomics 
This relates to how all the controls connect with the driver, along with seats designed to optimize correct posture and combat fatigue. Mazda clearly put some of its finest minds to work in this area. There are details like the location of navigation information or an amber light indicating when the wipers are in their Auto setting. Yet they all merge into a general feeling of things being just right.
Driving dynamics 
In our opinion, this is the CX-30’s superpower, what makes it different from the humdrum competition. It’s responsive and enjoyable, especially when the turbo engine is in residence. The fun is accessible, yet the CX-30 remains a sensible SUV.
All-wheel drive 
Every CX-30 has all-wheel drive as standard. This transparent system can move power from axle to axle and wheel to wheel, optimizing traction. We find it reassuring and confidence-inspiring.
Driver aids 
Every CX-30 comes with a set of advanced safety and driver assistance technologies, such as automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, high-beam assist, and lane-keeping assistance.
Rain-sensing wipers 
Standard across the board, this system senses moisture on the windshield and automatically engages the wipers. The wiper speed adjusts in relation to the volume of rain.
Proximity Keyless Entry 
One of our must-have features is available in the Select Sport trim and above. It allows the doors to unlock automatically if the key fob is on your person. Push-button start is standard on all trim levels. We argue that once you’ve experienced this feature, you won’t want to be without it.

Upscale Cabin

The CX-30 provides <a href="https://www.kbb.com/comparison/lets-take-a-look-inside-the-mazda-cx-30/">one of the more high-end cabins</a> in its class. Our owner reviews praise the CX-30 for its quiet and comfortable cabin. Many mainstream manufacturers are upping their interior design game, making their cabins look good enough for a premium marque. Mazda has long been ahead of this particular curve.
High-quality materials are arranged expertly into a simple yet pleasing layout, topped off with a decent-sized 8.8-inch infotainment display — 10.25-inch touchscreen in upper trims. The top Premium Plus trim’s interior quality rivals some luxury SUVs.
The CX-30 is a subcompact SUV, so space is not exactly plentiful. But adults will enjoy more than sufficient room up front, and 36.3 inches of rear legroom is about average, although the Kia Seltos and Honda HR-V have more. Where the CX-30 does dip a bit below average is cargo capacity. The Seltos and HR-V have noticeably more luggage space than the CX-30’s 20.2 cubic feet with the rear seats in place. However, we do like that the CX-30 offers a powered tailgate.

The 2026 Mazda CX-30 continues to dominate its class in performance and driving dynamics. If how you get to a destination outweighs your need to take a lot of stuff with you, the CX-30 is the ticket. Retaining its quickness and legendary athleticism for 2026, it still punches up with a thoughtfully styled, meticulously constructed, and beautifully finished interior. Oh, and we’ve always applauded its elegant exterior styling, too.

It’s the second and third rungs on the trim-level ladder that prove the most popular — the S Select Sport and the S Preferred. One of those would also be our preference, too, depending on budget.
The CX-30 is priced about mid-pack in its segment. The base (and most popular) engine of the CX-30 lineup is a naturally aspirated (not turbocharged) 2.5-liter 4-cylinder unit developing 186 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque. This goes to all four wheels through a 6-speed automatic transmission.
The higher-performance alternative adds a turbocharger to create 250 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque with premium gasoline. Save a few pennies per gallon at the pump using regular fuel, and those numbers dip to 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque — still a healthy amount of muscle for a subcompact SUV.
3-Year/36,000-Mile Warranty
Mazda’s new-vehicle warranty lasts three years or 36,000 miles, whichever happens first. Powertrains are covered for five years or 60,000 miles. This is all typical for mainstream manufacturers.

What's new for 2026

The biggest news is the addition of two Aire Editions: one each for the non-turbo and turbo lineups. The 2026 Volkswagen Taos is a roomy, fun-to-drive subcompact SUV with plenty of crowd-pleasing tech.

Our time behind the wheel of almost every Taos we’ve driven has been enjoyable. That includes the current one with its lively turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. Every Taos model gets a traditional 8-speed automatic transmission with smooth shifting that maximizes power delivery.
Generally, Volkswagen cars have a knack for feeling a cut above the fray thanks to taut manners and an eagerness that runs beneath the surface. It’s a German thing, extending even to the automaker’s smallest SUV.
During our 160-mile jaunt around the Texas Hill Country in a Taos SEL 4Motion — love the dark blue leather interior, by the way — we were impressed not only with the performance of the power boost in collaboration with the 8-speed transmission but also with the cabin&#8217;s quiet. This is no easy feat when rolling over the pebble-like pavement of many of the Hill Country roads.
Well-balanced and composed, the Taos performs with nearly silent efficiency. Even at speed, the Taos had plenty of grunt in reserve for quick sprints around slower vehicles.
Fuel economy
The Taos earns 31 mpg in mixed city/highway driving with front-wheel drive and 28 mpg combined with all-wheel drive. These figures are above average for the class, at least for front-wheel-drive models. If fuel economy ranks high on your priorities, you might want to check out the <a href="https://www.kbb.com/toyota/corolla-cross-hybrid/2025/">Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid</a>, which comes standard with all-wheel drive and earns 42 mpg combined.

Stylish Wrapper

The Taos has long looked like the proper youngest sibling in the VW SUV family, and that’s fine by us. We like the squared-off, slightly blocky design. In addition to lending boldness on the outside, it’s what helps create all that versatile space within. The S gets 17-inch alloy wheels, while all the SE versions sport 18-inch ones. The SEL wins the wheel contest with 19-inchers.

IQ.Drive 
This is the name for VW’s suite of active safety and driver assistance features, and it’s standard for all Taos trim levels. It bundles adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and active blind-spot monitoring.
Cargo capacity 
Most people don’t buy a subcompact SUV if copious cargo room is a priority, but we appreciate it when it’s there. In this respect, the Taos is among the best in its class, with up to 65.9 cubic feet with the rear seat folded.
Digital Cockpit 
Such all-digital instrument clusters debuted in luxury vehicles from Audi, VW’s corporate cousin, and it’s now standard in a Taos.
Carefree Maintenance Program 
All new 2026 Taos models come with two years or 20,000 miles of complimentary maintenance.
4Motion 
This is the name for VW’s all-wheel-drive system. While most rivals also offer all-wheel drive, not all have four user-adjustable drive modes, including off-road and off-road custom.
Wireless phone charging 
A helpful feature if there ever was one, this is standard in SE and SEL models. Place a compatible phone on the pad, and it begins charging. Even better, Volkswagen is hastening the charging time for 2026.

Tidy Interior Design

The 2026 VW Taos provides a standard 8-inch touchscreen. SE and SEL models get touch-based climate controls (for better or worse). Base Taos S models have two-tone black and gray cloth upholstery, SE models get VW&#8217;s CloudTex synthetic leather, and top-line SEL trims get genuine leather upholstery available in either a black/gray combo or a handsome dark blue color.
Though unseen, acoustic dampening excels at reducing the intrusion of outside noise into the cabin. Furthermore, its front seats are wonderfully well bolstered, offering a solid blend of comfort and support.
We applaud this VW for its 2-row/5-passenger cabin that feels more spacious than its exterior dimensions would suggest. This is especially notable in the cargo area, which boasts up to 65.9 cubic feet with the rear seats folded in front-drive versions (or 60.2 for those with all-wheel drive). Those figures are right up there with the Hyundai Kona (63.7) and Kia Seltos (62.8).

The 2026 Volkswagen Taos boasts more interior space than expected. This is important because the main reason to buy an SUV is people space/cargo room. In fact, better-than-average space for its segment is a common theme among Volkswagen SUVs like the Tiguan and Atlas. It holds true for the Taos, as well. Moreover, we find the Taos a blast to drive thanks to its German handling dynamics and spirited turbocharged engine.
