We haven&#8217;t yet driven this latest iteration of the XC90, but we expect it to drive much like the previous model thanks to the shared core architecture and powertrains.
The XC90 B5 makes 247 horsepower from a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, and in driving the previous model, we&#8217;ve found there’s plenty of pep for freeway merges and all the usual day-to-day stuff, but it lacks the punch some might prefer in a luxury SUV. The midlevel B6 ups the power to a more interesting level, with 295 hp, thanks to the addition of more forced induction. At the top of the lineup is the XC90 T8, making 455 hp and hitting 60 mph in a brisk five seconds.
Regardless of variant, we expect the XC90 will continue to favor comfort over outright performance. We think that’s exactly the way it should be with a family SUV.
Relative to the competition, the XC90 offers a good mix of power and value. Fans of high-value, fun-driving family vehicles should also consider the 290-hp Acura MDX or the 300-hp Genesis GV80.
Fuel Economy
All three 2025 Volvo XC90 powertrains have all-wheel drive (AWD) as standard. The entry point is the B5, with a turbocharged 4-cylinder gasoline engine and a mild hybrid system for 26 mpg in combined city/highway driving. The midgrade XC90 B6 adds a supercharger to the B5’s setup for more power and 23 mpg combined. Finally, the T8 pairs the turbocharged 4-cylinder with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system to achieve 33 miles of all-electric range and the equivalent of 58 mpg combined.
All in all, the XC90 gets good gas mileage for its class. Comparing base models, the XC90’s 26 mpg beats the GV80 and the MDX (both 21 mpg combined), and even the BMW X5 xDrive40i (25 mpg combined). Most of the remaining rivals sit between these bookends.

Although it’s been updated for 2025, you’d be forgiven for not being able to tell at first glance — the changes are subtle. But considering how arguably good-looking the XC90 remains even now, nearly a decade on from its launch, Volvo is demonstrating a brilliant “if it’s not broken, don’t fix it” strategy.

Refreshed Interior

The larger central touchscreen and redesigned dashboard layout help bring the XC90 in line with the new EX30 and EX90 electric SUVs, and the updated software brings a host of fresh features and apps. This tech can also be expanded further after purchase thanks to over-the-air (OTA) updates.
Other new interior features include additional storage space in the center console, an additional cup holder, and a relocated wireless charging pad. Updated lighting, air vents, and decorative panels add to the revamped look.
Front-row comfort is great, with plenty of legroom and headroom for most. The second row is roomy but not expansive, with 37 inches of legroom in both the 6-seat and 7-seat configurations. All models have 31.9 inches of legroom in the third row, which makes it a good option for kids but a temporary solution at best for taller teens and adults.

The 2025 Volvo XC90’s updates play to its strengths — it was already a refined and good-looking (in our eyes) luxury SUV. Now it’s even more so, with a dash of upgraded technology. The XC90 seats six or seven in its upscale cabin, with comfortable seats, especially in the first two rows. High-end audio, premium materials, and cool Scandinavian design enhance the XC90’s appeal even further.
On top of that, the XC90 gets excellent safety ratings, making it a great choice for family transport.

The 2025 XC90 offers a choice of three powertrains: The base B5 and midrange B6 are both mild hybrids, while the top-spec T8 is a plug-in hybrid. All three use an 8-speed automatic transmission.
The B5 employs a 247-hp turbocharged 4-cylinder engine producing 258 lb-ft of torque. Maximum towing capacity is 4,000 pounds.
The B6 uses a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder unit rated for 295 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. The B6 can tow up to 6,000 pounds.
Finally, there’s the XC90 T8, a PHEV with a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that develops 455 hp and 523 lb-ft of torque. The XC90 T8 can tow up to 5,000 pounds.
4-Year/50,000-Mile Warranty
Volvo’s vehicle and powertrain warranties last four years or 50,000 miles, whichever happens first, and include roadside assistance, a typical arrangement for luxury marques. The first three scheduled services are free, up to three years or 36,000 miles. Hybrid batteries are covered for eight years or 100,000 miles, as required by federal law.

The 2025 Volvo XC90’s updates don’t amount to an all-new vehicle, as the same core architecture and powertrains are in this new model. However, the new XC90’s exterior has been updated, the interior has been redesigned to echo the new EX30 and EX90 electric SUVs, and the digital user experience has been upgraded to match those new EVs as well. The 2025 Lexus GX is a midsize luxury SUV with a rare combination of real off-road capability and high-end luxury features.

Power, Ride, and Handling

Despite being a truck-based, body-on-frame SUV, the 2025 Lexus GX has a composed and crisp driving demeanor. The brakes and steering are responsive, yet it’s also comfortable and compliant, as expected of an off-roader. Despite the day-to-day ease of driving and maneuvering, especially compared with the previous generations, this GX remains decidedly rugged and not car-like.
The 349-horsepower, twin-turbocharged V6 is potent, and a massive 479 lb-ft of torque helps accelerate the GX from a standstill to 60 mph in an athletic 6.5 seconds. That much power and acceleration mean zero issues when making a fast freeway merge, and all that torque helps the GX conquer surprisingly steep gradients. The even more capable Overtrail and Overtrail+ models get an extra inch of ride height for 2025, enabling excursions further into the wild.
Fuel Economy
The GX’s fuel economy isn’t great — about the same as a Chevrolet Suburban — but it’s not wildly off-target among off-road-focused luxury SUVs. At 17 mpg combined, the GX 550 fits between the combined ratings of the Mercedes-Benz G550 (18 mpg) and the Land Rover Defender 110 (16 mpg).
Even compared to something like the efficiency-focused plug-in hybrid BMW X5 xDrive50e, it’s not all doom and gloom for the GX. Once the X5 PHEV’s batteries are depleted, it gets just 22 mpg combined. Options like the Audi Q7 (20 mpg) and Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 4Matic (21 mpg) achieve noticeably better gas mileage at the expense of much less off-road ability.

Heroic Exterior

Like a futuristic movie’s hero vehicle, the 2025 Lexus GX’s rugged, carved-from-a-block-of-silicon styling is eye-catching. From the iconic spindle grille to the bluff rear and its wide LED light bar, the overall effect is one of rugged elegance.

Traffic Jam Assist 
Taking over the steering, throttle, and braking — in the right conditions — this feature basically drives itself in stop-and-go traffic. It’s a welcome feature for anyone who deals with traffic regularly.
Overtrail trims 
The Overtrail and Overtrail+ trims of the GX add real off-road extras like a limited-slip locking center differential, larger all-terrain tires, detachable front and rear stabilizer bars, and a host of off-road electronic aids. For 2025, they also gain an extra inch of ground clearance.
Proactive Driving Assist 
Rather than a self-driving system, Lexus’ Proactive Driving Assist takes a subtler approach, gently adjusting steering and speed in anticipation of corners, other vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians. Basically, it takes some of the cognitive load off the driver’s shoulders.
Dynamic Sky roof 
Opt for the top-of-the-line GX 550 Luxury+, and this massive panoramic glass roof is included. Its defining magic trick is switching from transparent to opaque at the push of a button.
21-speaker surround-sound 
Mark Levinson audio systems are always excellent, and this 21-speaker surround-sound example underlines that reputation.
Phone as a key 
Who wants to carry a bulky key fob if they don’t have to? If you’re like most Americans, your phone is rarely out of reach, so using an app to make it work like a key is a no-brainer for convenience. As a bonus, you can send digital keys to friends or family if you need to.

Capable Interior

Bold, high-tech, and ruggedly luxurious, the GX’s cabin is one of our favorites. Contrasting with its more avant-garde exterior, the GX’s interior is more conventional and businesslike.
Three-row seating for up to seven occupants (except in 2-row-only, 5-seat Overtrail trims) is spacious and comfortable until you get to the third row, which is a bit short on legroom (31.9 inches) and other space. It’s fine for occasional use, but those who regularly need a third row will be better served by a vehicle like the Lexus TX. Second-row legroom is also fair at 36.7 inches, an inch less than the BMW X5 and more than four inches less than the Mercedes-Benz GLE.
Cargo room is good for the class, with 10.3 cubic feet behind the third row, or 40.2 cubic feet behind the second row with the third row folded, or 45.6 cubic feet in Overtrail models that skip the third row. For comparison, the Land Rover Defender 110 offers 34 cubic feet behind its second row, and the BMW X5 has 33.9 cubic feet.

Other midsize luxury SUVs offer impressive luxury and good off-road performance, but the truck-based architecture that underpins the Lexus GX sets it apart from the midsize field. Add to that its 7-occupant capacity, Lexus-grade cabin materials and design, a host of modern tech, and a muscular turbocharged engine, and you have a recipe for a truly impressive machine. As an eminently civilized way to explore completely uncivilized territory, the Lexus GX is hard to beat.
We’ve logged hundreds of hours driving and evaluating this generation of <a href="https://www.kbb.com/suv/best-luxury-mid-size-suvs/">midsize luxury SUVs</a>, including the Lexus GX.

The 2025 GX starts in the mid-$60,000 region and runs up through to the mid-$80,000 bracket. That gives it a similar range to its nearest natural competitor, the equally luxurious and off-road-capable <a href="https://www.kbb.com/land-rover/defender-110/">2025 Land Rover Defender 110</a> &#8212; up to a point, anyway. The Defender carries on into the $170,000 area, thanks to its high-performance V8 and Octa variants. Likewise, the <a href="https://www.kbb.com/mercedes-benz/g-class/">Mercedes-Benz G-Class</a> starts around $150,000 and heads upward from there. Compared with more typical luxury SUVs, the GX’s pricing is about on par with the likes of <a href="https://www.kbb.com/audi/q7/">Audi Q7</a>, <a href="https://www.kbb.com/bmw/x5/2025/">BMW X5</a>, and <a href="https://www.kbb.com/mercedes-benz/gle/">Mercedes-Benz GLE</a>.

The 2025 GX 550 employs a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 making 349 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque in all trims and variants. All four wheels are driven with standard 4-wheel drive (4WD) via a 10-speed automatic transmission. The GX can tow up to 8,000 pounds.
4-Year/50,000-Mile Warranty
Like many other luxury models, the Lexus GX’s basic warranty lasts four years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. At six years or 70,000 miles, the powertrain warranty is better than most luxury rivals. Lexus also includes complimentary maintenance for the first year or 10,000 miles.
Safety
The previous Lexus GX earned a 4-Star overall safety rating (out of five stars) from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (<a href="https://www.nhtsa.gov/ratings">NHTSA</a>). We expect the new model to do as well or better. Every GX includes Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, which bundles features like automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, all-speed adaptive cruise control, lane-tracing assistance, lane departure warning with steering assistance, road-sign recognition, and more.

The Lexus GX was all-new for the 2024 model year and mostly carries forward for 2025 with just a couple of minor feature updates. The Lexus Memory System — which stores driver&#8217;s seat, side mirror, and steering column settings — is now standard on all GX trims, as is a tilting/telescoping steering column. Overtrail and Overtrail+ models also receive a standard one-inch suspension lift.

The 2025 Tesla Model X remains one of the most capable electric luxury SUVs, with long range, punchy performance, and advanced tech.

The two variants available at present are the base Model X and the Model X Plaid. Leveraging the timeless humor of the 1987 movie Spaceballs, the Plaid represents Tesla’s most potent trim spec, capable of accelerating from zero to 60 mph in just 2.5 seconds. The base Model X is still quick, making good use of its dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) to run from a standstill to 60 mph in only 3.8 seconds. The fun of instant-on torque in an electric vehicle (EV) is immediately apparent in either version.
Riding on an adaptive suspension, the Model X is perfectly capable of handling that acceleration. Its low center of gravity (thanks to the floor-mounted battery) means cornering involves relatively little body roll. This also contributes to a quiet, smooth ride.
Although few Model X owners choose to, the vehicle is capable of towing up to 5,000 pounds.
Range and Charging
One of the headline features of Tesla vehicles over the past decade has been the availability of free access and use of the Tesla Supercharger network. While that’s still available for the Model X for the time being, Tesla is set to end that free access soon and start charging. Although when “soon” will be is anybody’s guess. While it lasts, however, free access to the massive Supercharger network is a definite advantage.
Regardless, the Model X offers lots of range and capability. While official 2025 EPA figures aren’t yet out for the base Model X, it is expected to carry over last year’s maximum range rating of 335 miles. Impressive, to be sure, but eclipsed by the likes of the Rivian R1S (380 miles) and Lucid Gravity (around 450 miles). Still, the Model X offers more range than the Q8 e-tron (272 miles), EQS SUV (323 miles), and the EX90 (300 miles).
The Model X charges impressively quickly, regaining 80% of its charge in about 30 to 40 minutes when using a 250-kilowatt charger. The Model X’s rivals are also capable of similar figures.

Egg-Shaped Exterior

The familiar Tesla profile remains undisturbed in the latest Model X. With nearly a decade under its belt, you might think the design would be aging, but the relentless pursuit of efficiency means designs tend to converge back to the streamlined egg shape that underpins the Model X’s core lines. There have been some issues with the Model X’s body quality, especially concerning door gaps on the tricky Falcon Wing rear doors. Owners have also complained of uneven panel gaps elsewhere, and paint flaws.

Impressive range 
The Model X’s range, even in its highest-performance guise, is still as good as, or better than, most of its competition. Although there are finally a few newcomers to challenge Tesla’s dominance.
Semi-autonomous tech 
While it’s not the fully hands-off self-driving system that’s been promised for a decade, Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (Supervised) are useful partially autonomous driving features that help reduce the strain of longer trips or stop-and-go commutes.
Supercharger network 
Even though you’re unlikely to drive your car overseas, just knowing a global Supercharger network of over 50,000 chargers is out there waiting for you can be comforting. Unfortunately, the Model X will soon lose free access to the network.
Available 3-row seating 
It’s a smaller third row best reserved for occasional use, but it’s a great option to have for those times when you do need it. Also, opting for a third row opens up the availability of second-row captain’s chairs, which can improve comfort as well as accessibility.
Falcon Wing doors 
Unique and visually striking, these upward-opening doors help make it easier to get in and out without worrying about dinging them on nearby vehicles or garage walls, provided there’s enough overhead clearance to allow the doors to open.
Simple interior 
While the 17-inch central touchscreen once dwarfed competitive offerings, the industry has caught up and surpassed Tesla in display size. Tesla, however, has held on to a simple, uncluttered cabin design that’s still a standout in the industry.

With five seats as standard equipment and six or seven seats available (depending on whether you choose second-row captain’s chairs or a second-row bench), the Model X is a flexible platform for a wide variety of uses and family types. If you don’t need the seventh seat, we recommend the second-row captain’s chairs on 3-row models, because they make access to the third row a lot easier.
Sitting in the driver’s seat, one of the most interesting available features is the “yoke” steering wheel, modeled on the shape of an airplane’s yoke. While it was the standard steering wheel for a while, it has become a $1,000 option, with the familiar round steering wheel now standard equipment.
The other main interaction surface for the driver and front passenger is a 17-inch touchscreen, as there are no other major controls. The infotainment system and vehicle settings are easy enough to use, but it’s worth noting that there’s no support for Apple CarPlay or Android Auto phone integration. There is, however, a wide wireless charging pad for devices.
Space in the cabin is good, with a roomy front row and either 38.7 inches of second-row legroom with the bench seat or 39.8 inches with the second-row captain’s chairs. That’s on par with the luxury electric SUV alternatives from Audi and BMW, but a couple of inches less than the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV. There’s up to 92 cubic feet of cargo space as well, depending on the seating configuration chosen. That compares well to the BMW iX and Rivian R1S, and is a fair bit more than the EQS or Q8.

The Tesla Model X has been on the market since 2015. During that time, it has evolved, gained new features, and increased range and performance. Now it is available with a yoke-style steering wheel, can accelerate from a standstill to 60 mph in just 2.5 seconds, and offers up to 329 miles of range. Of course, it still has its Falcon Wing rear doors and optional 3-row seating. The <a href="https://www.kbb.com/tesla/">Tesla</a> brand has faced some public relations struggles of late, as well as issues with inconsistent build quality and difficulties with service. Yet customers still express a high degree of satisfaction, according to our owner reviews.

Aside from the more expensive Gravity and EQS (both around $100K), most of these alternatives start within a few thousand of the Model X, and most offer similar space, range, and features for the money.

Battery and Efficiency

Both the standard Model X and the Plaid employ a 100-kWh battery and dual-motor all-wheel drive. In the standard Model X, that should be good for up to 335 miles of range, while the Plaid manages 314 miles. Both models are highly efficient, earning ratings of 100 MPGe and 94 MPGe, respectively. That’s notably better than the likes of the Volvo EX90 (81 MPGe), Audi Q8 e-tron (78 MPGe), and Rivian R1S (80 MPGe).
4-Year/50,000-Mile Warranty
Tesla’s basic new-car warranty lasts four years or 50,000 miles, whichever happens first. This is typical among luxury cars. The battery in the Model X is covered for eight years or 150,000 miles. Our consumer reviews and other owner reports indicate the reliability and maintenance costs of Tesla models have been a mixed bag. Owners have also reported long wait times at service centers and/or poor parts availability. If you live in an area with many Tesla cars on the road but only a few service stations, you could encounter some trouble when your Model X needs service.
Safety
The Tesla Model X was last crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (<a href="https://www.nhtsa.gov/ratings">NHTSA</a>) in 2021, but it received a 5-star overall safety rating back then. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (<a href="https://www.iihs.org/">IIHS</a>) hasn’t crash-tested the Model X.

Because Tesla doesn’t really do model years like the rest of the industry, the idea of a “2025 Tesla Model X” is a structure imposed on it from the outside. That said, Tesla hasn’t made any significant changes to the Model X for this year.

The 2025 Tesla Model Y continues to be a best-selling EV despite some headwinds, thanks to its balance of range and technology at a reasonable price.

The 2025 Tesla Model Y Long Range offers a choice of rear-wheel drive (RWD) or dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD). The rear-wheel-drive model is a touch slower to accelerate at 5.4 seconds to 60 mph compared to the all-wheel-drive version’s 4.8 seconds, but it gains 26 miles more range. The previous Performance model isn’t yet offered on the manufacturer’s website, but we expect it will become available later in the model year, offering similar performance to last year’s 3.5-second zero-to-60-mph time.
Whether rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, there&#8217;s instant-on electric torque at just about any speed — one of the characteristics that make EVs so fun to drive. The Model Y makes good use of the thrust, with confident steering and braking, although some of our consumer reviews have noted a choppy ride quality and noisy cabins.
Regarding self-driving features, the Model Y offers the standard Autopilot as well as Full Self-Driving (Supervised). Standard Autopilot is much like the standard active safety systems from other automakers. Full Self-Driving (Supervised) makes extended bouts of hands-free driving possible, like GM’s Super Cruise, Ford’s BlueCruise, or Hyundai’s Highway Driving Assist.
<h3>Range and Charging</h3>
The 2025 Tesla Model Y is available as Long Range All-Wheel Drive, Long Range All-Wheel Drive, and Performance All-Wheel Drive models. The best range comes with the Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive, which is capable of 337 miles per the EPA. The Long Range All-Wheel Drive achieves 311 miles of range, and the Performance All-Wheel Drive is rated at 277 miles.
Those figures all compare well with the competition. The Ford Mustang Mach-E, for example, is rated for 320 miles in rear-drive/extended-battery form, and the Ioniq 5 rear-wheel drive scores 318 miles of range.
Naturally, the Model Y makes great use of Tesla’s Supercharger network, and it can charge to 80% in less than 20 minutes. The Mustang Mach-E matches the 20-minute charge to 80%, while the Ioniq 5 manages the same feat in 18 minutes on a 350-kW fast charger.

Cybertruck-Inspired Exterior

With thin, Cybertruck-inspired lighting at each end and exterior design tweaks aimed at improving range and efficiency, the 2025 Model Y looks simultaneously familiar and fresh. The egg-like profile is a factor in passenger space warring with aerodynamics, helping to keep the Model Y at the front of its class in terms of range and efficiency. Gone are the previous 21-inch wheel options, replaced with a 19-inch wheel and tire package for enhanced quietness and comfort. Some may prefer the look of the larger wheels on previous models, but it’s those models that were most likely to get complaints from owners.

Lots of range 
Tesla claims a maximum of 357 miles of range on its website, but the EPA says that’s closer to 337 miles. Either way, that’s a lot of range for the money, and we like that.
Big screen 
Tesla’s 15-inch screen isn’t as massive as the dash-spanning units in some other SUVs, but it’s still plenty big to see and access information.
Sentry Mode 
Even when parked and turned off, the Model Y still has the ability to use its cameras to capture any incidents that may happen to or near the vehicle. An optional Live Camera feature even lets you check in on your car remotely, flash the lights, honk the horn, or speak through the car’s audio system.
Hands-free driving 
The standard Autopilot system offers the active safety assists we’ve come to expect in modern vehicles, while the optional Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system offers hands-free cruising in a range of environments, including city streets.
Acceleration 
Although the even-quicker Performance model isn’t yet on the table for 2025, the dual-motor Long Range All-Wheel Drive model generates impressive thrust, and even the RWD model is quick enough to be fun.
Quieter ride 
The comfort- and quietness-focused upgrades to the 2025 Model Y address one of its previous weak points: cabin noise. A smaller wheel and tire package, together with other upgrades, also help reduce noise entering the cabin.

Upgraded Interior

Tesla’s interiors have always been known for their simple (some might say overly simple) designs and layouts. The 2025 Model Y doesn’t change that aesthetic, but does update it with new materials. Tesla has also taken pains to improve quietness for 2025, with an updated wheel and tire package design to reduce noise.
The 2025 Model Y also adds the option of rear-seat displays and ventilated front seats. The power-recline second-row seats fold flat to leave 76 cubic feet of storage space — considerably more than most of its competitors. To compare, the Mustang Mach-E offers 59.7 cubic feet, while the Ioniq 5 has 59.3 cubic feet.
Seating for five is currently the only arrangement in the 2025 Model Y. The formerly optional third row brought that tally up to seven. Third-row legroom was short (just 26.5 inches), but the second row’s 41.6 inches matches the 2025 Honda CR-V, so perhaps it makes sense to drop the third-row offering.

Whatever the boss of the company might be up to, the Tesla Model Y remains one of the longest-range electric SUVs on the market, particularly in its class. The competition is continually getting better, however, and our readers have indicated that the Model Y continues to face build quality issues. So it makes sense that Tesla would feel the need to enhance the Model Y for 2025 to keep it at the front of the pack.

All 2025 Tesla Model Ys come with an 81-kWh battery pack, the same size as last year, despite increases in range across the board.
