The 2026 Hyundai Sonata is powered by a 191-horsepower 4-cylinder engine with an 8-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive (FWD), or optional all-wheel drive in the case of the SEL Sport trim. This side of the Sonata is more about comfort and fuel economy than precision and speed, which we can get behind without a qualm. Overall, it’s an agreeable experience.
Drivers who want more muscle to call on occasionally, the N Line has a turbocharged engine, which puts out a hearty 290 hp through a wet dual-clutch 8-speed automatic transmission, a tweaked suspension, and 19-inch wheels. A sports sedan in this class from a mainstream brand is increasingly rare, so the Sonata N Line brings some welcome adrenaline to this practical segment.
In addition to the turbo engine, the N Line trim is the only variant of the non-hybrid Sonata that comes with Highway Driving Assist. It doesn’t allow hands-free driving, but it is one of our favorite semi-autonomous highway driving systems. It keeps the Sonata a safe distance from the car in front of you and centered in your lane while feeling very natural.
<h3>Fuel Economy</h3>
The Hyundai Sonata’s base engine returns up to 28 city/38 highway/32 combined mpg with front-wheel drive and 25 city/34 highway/28 combined mpg with all-wheel drive. These efficiency ratings are about the same as those of the Kia K5 and the non-hybrid Honda Accord.
It’s worth mentioning that the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid nets up to 47 city/56 highway/51 combined mpg, which is about the same as the Camry and a little better than the Accord Hybrid.

High-Tech Interior

We’ve been impressed with the technology of <a href="https://www.kbb.com/hyundai/">Hyundai</a> models in recent years, and the Sonata is no exception. Dual 12.3-inch displays span the dash; one is a digital gauge cluster, and the other is the central infotainment display. Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard across the board.
The front seats are all-day comfortable, and the top N Line trim gets unique, sporty seats with H-Tex and microfiber upholstery. Other niceties that come with the N Line model include rear seat vents, a sunroof, and Bose audio.
The rear seat space is below average at 34.8 inches, but it’s certainly roomy enough for kids. If you’ll regularly have adults in the back seats, they’ll appreciate the extra space in the Camry or Accord. We noticed the trunk has a nice, wide opening that makes it easy to load and unload. It measures 16 cubic feet, which is more trunk space than the Camry but less than the Accord.

The Hyundai Sonata doesn’t have the sales numbers of the big guys in this class, but it’s an appealing choice in midsize sedans. For starters, its sleek design makes it look not quite like anything else in this class. Its beauty is more than skin-deep. Inside is a comfortable and high-tech cabin, and the Sonata boasts top-notch safety ratings and the best warranty coverage in its class. Further compounding its practicality, this sedan is available with all-wheel drive (AWD), and there’s even a turbo engine option, making it more exciting to drive. The 2026 Hyundai Sonata is priced at the lower end of midsize sedans. The two lower trims of the non-hybrid Hyundai Sonata are powered by a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine rated at 191 hp and 181 lb-ft of torque. It’s mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission that routes power to either the front or all four wheels.
The sportier Sonata N Line is powered by a gutsy turbocharged 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 290 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the front wheels through an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
<h3>5-Year/60,000-Mile Warranty</h3>
There are no better warranties in the mainstream milieu than those offered by Hyundai. The new-car warranty is five years or 60,000 miles, whichever happens first. The powertrain is covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles.
<h3>Safety Ratings</h3>
The Sonata currently holds the highest accolade of Top Safety Pick+ from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (<a href="https://www.iihs.org/ratings" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IIHS</a>). Granted, so do the Camry and Accord, but it’s still an impressive award. The Sonata also took the maximum 5-Star overall score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (<a href="https://www.nhtsa.gov/ratings" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NHTSA</a>).

What's new for

Hyundai simplified the 2026 Sonata&#8217;s trim lineup. The old SEL and SEL Convenience trims are gone and replaced with the SEL Sport trim with desirable features like 18-inch alloy wheels, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a wireless charging pad, and available all-wheel drive.

The 2026 Lexus RX offers a compelling mix of refinement, technology and value, making it a benchmark among midsize luxury SUVs.

The RX 350 employs a turbocharged engine generating 275 horsepower, with front-wheel drive (FWD) as standard or all-wheel drive (AWD) available as an option. We&#8217;ve found this version of the RX responsive, efficient, and easy to drive. The cabin remains quiet and composed, even in stop-and-go traffic.
The RX 350h hybrid sacrifices a bit of performance (246 hp maximum output) for significantly better fuel economy. The 366-hp RX 500h, on the other hand, delivers more power and sharper handling thanks to upgrades in the suspension, steering, and all-wheel-drive system.
The 304-hp RX450h+ balances the power and economy mission while adding an impressive all-electric driving range on top. Despite having less horsepower than the RX 500h, and a continuously variable transmission, it’s only about 0.3 of a second slower from standstill to 60 mph, with a time of 6.2 seconds.
Fuel Economy
The RX is more efficient than many of its competitors, returning 25 mpg combined with FWD and 24 mpg with AWD. By comparison, the Genesis GV80 and Audi Q7 average 22 mpg combined, while the Cadillac XT5 nearly matches the RX with 24 mpg combined.
The RX 350h hybrid improves fuel economy to 36 mpg combined with standard AWD. The RX 500h, also AWD, focuses more on performance but still manages 27 mpg combined.
The RX 450h+ plug-in hybrid leads the pack with 83 MPGe and up to 37 miles of electric-only driving when fully charged.

Modern Exterior

The RX’s exterior design is sleek and contemporary. It’s a familiar look and its popularity suggests it continues to resonate with buyers. The F Sport Design package adds visual flair with specific front and rear styling, exclusive wheels, and special trim accents.

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto 
Standard across the lineup, wireless smartphone integration keeps things tidy and convenient &#8212; no cables required. Wireless charging also becomes standard for 2026, allowing users to ditch the cords entirely.
Traffic Jam Assist 
While not fully autonomous, the RX can manage low-speed traffic with automated steering, braking, and acceleration under certain conditions, perfect for stop-and-go driving.
Gorgeous color palette 
The RX offers a wide range of exterior colors, including Caviar, Cloudburst Gray, Copper Crest, Grecian Water, Iridium, Incognito, and Ultra White. Interior options include Macadamia, Palomino, Peppercorn, and Rioja Red.
21-speaker audio 
The Mark Levinson surround-sound system delivers crisp, immersive sound through 21 speakers.  It’s one of the best in this class.
Phone as a key 
The RX can recognize your smartphone and use it as a digital key. You can lock, unlock, and start the vehicle without taking your phone out, and even share access with friends and family.
Automated parallel parking 
This system takes the stress out of parallel parking by controlling steering, throttle, and braking using 12 sensors and four cameras, allowing the RX to essentially park itself.

Luxurious Cabin

Lexus always delivers on interior luxury. The RX’s 2-row/5-passenger cabin is quiet, well-appointed, and thoughtfully designed. Seats are supportive for long drives, and the layout is intuitive without feeling cluttered.
Rear-seat legroom measures 37.4 inches, about average for the class. Cargo space behind the second row is 29.6 cubic feet, which trails the Genesis GV80 and Lincoln Nautilus by about five cubic feet, but is comparable to the Cadillac XT5. Folding down the rear seats opens up 46.2 cubic feet, still less than the 60 to 85 cubic feet offered by some competitors, and about level with the Lexus NX, a substantially smaller SUV.

The 2026 Lexus RX continues to be one of the top-selling luxury SUVs in the United States for excellent reasons, including its quiet cabin, plush interior, and ample standard equipment. The RX is also affordable to own, having previously earned the Kelley Blue Book <a href="https://www.kbb.com/lexus/rx/2024/cost-to-own/">Lowest 5-Year Cost to Own</a> award in its class. For luxury and practicality in a relatively affordable package, the RX is a great choice.
We’ve logged hundreds of hours driving and evaluating the current generation of <a href="https://www.kbb.com/suv/best-luxury-mid-size-suvs/">midsize luxury SUVs</a>, including the Lexus RX.

The RX enters the segment at a competitive price point, starting from just $51,175. Higher trims push into the $60K+ range, which is typical for this class. Rivals like the <a href="https://www.kbb.com/genesis/gv80/">Genesis GV80</a>, <a href="https://www.kbb.com/volvo/xc90/">Volvo XC90</a>, and <a href="https://www.kbb.com/audi/q7/">Audi Q7</a> start at around $60,000, while the <a href="https://www.kbb.com/acura/mdx/">Acura MDX</a>, <a href="https://www.kbb.com/lincoln/nautilus/">Lincoln Nautilus,</a> and <a href="https://www.kbb.com/cadillac/xt5/2024/">Cadillac XT5</a> start at around the $50,000 mark.

The 2026 RX offers four powertrains. The RX 350 features a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine producing 275 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard; all-wheel drive (AWD) is optional.
The RX 350h hybrid pairs an electric motor with a 4-cylinder engine to achieve 246 hp and 233 lb-ft of torque. That&#8217;s less powerful than the RX 350, but more efficient and comes with AWD as standard. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) is deployed here.
The RX 500h hybrid ups the ante with 366 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque, plus a 6-speed automatic transmission and standard AWD. It’s quicker than the RX 350 and nearly as efficient.
The RX 450h+ plug-in hybrid delivers 304 hp and an EPA-rated 37 miles of electric range.
<h3>4-Year/50,000-Mile Warranty</h3>
The Lexus RX comes with a 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty and a 6-year/70,000-mile powertrain warranty. A 10-year/150,000-mile warranty covers the hybrid battery, with an 8-year/100,000-mile warranty backing any other hybrid components. All RX models also come with a 1-year/10,000-mile complimentary service plan.
<h3>Safety</h3>
Although the 2026 model hasn&#8217;t been crash tested yet, the functionally identical 2025 Lexus RX received mostly 5-star marks from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (<a href="https://www.nhtsa.gov/ratings">NHTSA</a>). The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (<a href="https://www.iihs.org/ratings">IIHS</a>) named the RX a Top Safety Pick for 2024, but updates to front overlap testing methods saw lower scores for 2025. Contributing to the safety of every Lexus RX is the Lexus Safety System+ 3.0. It bundles features like automatic emergency braking, lane-tracing assistance, road sign recognition, all-speed adaptive cruise control, and more.

The 2026 Lexus RX receives small enhancements for this model year. F Sport Handling and F Sport Performance trim can now be paired with the available Appearance Package. Wireless phone charging is now standard across the lineup. The 2026 RX also sees the introduction of the Premium trim for the RX 450h+ model.

The 2026 Subaru Impreza is powered by a 152-horsepower 4-cylinder engine matched with a CVT automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. A familiar staple of <a href="https://www.kbb.com/subaru/">Subaru</a> models, it produces sufficient thrust to make piloting an Impreza an enjoyable enough experience. It can come off a bit coarse if you’re not used to Subaru’s trademark flat engines, but its refinement levels are above those of earlier Impreza generations.
Even more refined is the gutsier 2.5-liter boxer engine that powers the Impreza RS. This turns up the heat with 180 horsepower and is an easy upgrade to recommend if your budget allows it. That little extra power is noticeable; it drives a little smoother, and the fuel economy is about the same between the two engines.
Perhaps more significantly, the refined Impreza boasts outstanding ride quality. Subaru stiffened the chassis a bit in the 2024 redesign, which allowed the use of softer springs and firmer shock absorbers. The result? We find the Impreza a practical compact hatchback that’s remarkably comfortable on long trips but quite capable on twisty pavement.
<h3>Fuel Economy</h3>
The 2026 Subaru Impreza is rated at 27 city/34 highway/30 combined mpg with its base engine. All three of those numbers drop by one with the bigger engine in the RS, making a negligible difference in fuel costs.
The Impreza is about as efficient as the Mazda3, but the Honda Civic Hatchback and Toyota Corolla Hatchback get 34 and 35 combined mpg, respectively. The Civic Hatchback has a <a href="https://www.kbb.com/honda/civic-hybrid/">hybrid option</a> that gets up to 48 combined mpg and is priced close to the Impreza RS.

Sporty Styling

Now that the Subaru Impreza only comes in the Sport and RS trims, every model has a distinctly sporty look to it. Both trims have stylish 18-inch wheels with a dark gray finish, and the RS trim adds extra black exterior accents. A nice addition for 2026 is the new Citron Yellow Pearl paint option.

All-wheel drive 
A Subaru hallmark, with active torque vectoring to deliver the right amount of drive to each wheel for optimum grip and stability, all-wheel drive is standard in every new Impreza.
EyeSight 
The Impreza’s EyeSight driver assist includes forward collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and advanced adaptive cruise control with lane centering.
Infotainment system 
Subaru fits an 11.6-inch touchscreen into every 2026 Impreza, which is accompanied by wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration.
Paddle shifters 
Although they’re not a replacement for a stick shift, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters in the Impreza enable a manual mode with eight preset gear ratios, creating a more engaging driving experience.
RS model 
Rolling on a sport suspension, wearing unique exterior treatments, bringing extra safety tech, and producing 180 hp, we think the RS is worth the extra cost.
Harman Kardon audio 
The Impreza RS offers an optional Harman Kardon 10-speaker, 432-watt premium audio system, which brings music and podcasts to life.

Functional Interior

In typical Subaru fashion, the Impreza has a functional and practical interior that’s low on frills. The quality and durability are good for the price point. The interior’s centerpiece is a vertically oriented 11.6-inch infotainment display. The big icons are easy to manage, but this system is already feeling a little dated compared to some rivals. At least wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay come standard, and the HVAC controls still use physical buttons.

The Subaru Impreza is the offbeat brand’s most affordable car, and it brings with it many of the charms that people love about the brand. The starting price of the Subaru Impreza is a little high compared to the rest of the compact hatchback class, but remember, it ditched its base trim this year. The Impreza Sport is powered by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 152 hp and 145 lb-ft of torque. This horsepower is about the same as that of the Civic and Sentra; however, it’s less than that of the Corolla and the class-leading Mazda3.
The RS has a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that generates a more spirited 180 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque. Both have a continuous variable automatic transmission (CVT) that sends power to all four wheels. Unfortunately, there’s no manual option like there is for the sportier versions of the Civic, Corolla, and Mazda3.
<h3>3-Year/36,000-Mile Warranty</h3>
Subaru’s current new-car warranty lasts three years or 36,000 miles, whichever happens first. The powertrains are covered for five years or 60,000 miles, which is typical for the class. Subaru offers free routine maintenance for the first two years or 24,000 miles.
<h3>Safety</h3>
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (<a href="https://www.iihs.org/ratings" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IIHS</a>) gave the Impreza the top “Good” rating in every category of its testing except the moderate overlap front crash test, where it got a “Marginal” rating. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (<a href="https://www.nhtsa.gov/ratings" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NHTSA</a>) gave it the top 5-Star overall safety rating. The Subaru Impreza is well-equipped with standard safety features. The standard EyeSight safety tech suite has a wider camera view, automatic emergency braking, and advanced adaptive cruise control with lane centering. Emergency Lane Keep Assist is included on models equipped with blind-spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert.

What's new for 2026

This year, the 2026 Subaru Impreza lineup is simplified with only two trims: Sport and RS. The old base trim has been discontinued. The 2026 Subaru Ascent is motivated by a 260-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder engine matched with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and all-wheel drive. The horsepower count is on the low end among 3-row midsize SUVs. For instance, the Chevy Traverse has 328 hp, the Ford Explorer has 300 hp, and the <a href="https://www.kbb.com/kia/telluride/">Kia Telluride</a> has 291 hp. A sprint to 60 mph from a standstill takes just under 7 seconds, which is okay for this class.
Still, the Subaru Ascent delivers an agreeable driving experience. The ride is smooth, the cabin is reasonably quiet, and the seats are supportive. The handling isn’t particularly agile, but that’s forgivable in a family SUV. Regardless of the driving situation, we find the Ascent manageable, comfortable, and adequately powered.
The Ascent doesn’t skip a beat if the roads get ugly. The standard all-wheel drive, generous ground clearance, and X-Mode with hill-descent control make it great in the snow and for mild off-roading. Comparable SUVs in this class with at least a modicum of off-road chops include the Jeep Grand Cherokee L, Honda Pilot TrailSport, <a href="https://www.kbb.com/chevrolet/traverse/">Chevy Traverse</a> Z71, <a href="https://www.kbb.com/ford/explorer/2026/">Ford Explorer</a> Tremor, and <a href="https://www.kbb.com/nissan/pathfinder/">Nissan Pathfinder</a> Rock Creek.
<h3>Fuel Economy</h3>
Considering the Ascent has standard all-wheel drive, its 22 mpg in combined driving (20 city/26 highway) compares well to even some of its front-wheel-drive (FWD) competitors. However, all but the base trim of the Ascent get knocked down to a 21 mpg combined rating because of their bigger 20-inch wheels.

Rugged Exterior

The Subaru Ascent’s appearance changes slightly depending on the trim. A nice update to the base Premium trim this year is that it adopts some of the styling elements of the now-discontinued Onyx Edition, like black exterior trim and black wheels. The stylish Bronze Edition builds on the Limited trim with bronze accents, wheels, and interior stitching.

Every Ascent trim includes Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel-drive system and X-Mode with hill-descent control, making it a competent off-roader for a 3-row family SUV.
Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay 
This handy feature brings your maps, music, and more to the screen in your SUV without the need to take your phone out of a purse or pocket. We love to see it as a standard feature on the Ascent.
EyeSight 
Subaru’s extensive suite of driver-assist and safety technologies such as automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keep assist helps keep you and yours safe. Blind-spot monitoring is also standard.
11.6-inch touchscreen 
Featuring large icons, physical knobs for volume and tuning, and toggle switches for temperature control, this center-mounted touchscreen puts the driver in control.
All-Weather Package 
This bundle of features, standard on every trim, includes heated front seats, heated outboard mirrors, and heating elements at the base of the windshield to help prevent ice buildup on the wiper blades.
Available Harman Kardon audio 
Designed for the music lover, this audio upgrade includes 13 speakers, a subwoofer, and 792 watts of power. It’s standard on the Limited trim and up.

3-Row Interior

The interior of the Subaru Ascent has three rows of seats with room for up to eight people, or seven if you opt for second-row captain’s chairs instead of a bench. We find the first two rows spacious and comfortable, but would only relegate the kiddos to the third row. An adult of moderate height will fit back there, but it won’t be comfortable for very long. Its 31.7 inches of legroom places it in the bottom half of its segment. Second-row captain’s chairs make the second row more comfortable and the third row easier to access. They’re optional in the Premium and Limited trims and standard in every other trim.
The interior design is pleasant, and the seat comfort is suitable for long-distance road trips. Now that the Premium trim has standard StarTex water-repellant upholstery, there are no cloth seats in the 2026 Ascent lineup. The interior’s centerpiece is the standard tablet-type infotainment screen. This system is loaded with features like wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, but the native system is showing its age, and the interface can be a bit laggy. The interior grows nicer as you work your way up the model range, with perforated leather seats in the top Touring trims.
The cargo area in the Ascent is about typical for its class. With all the seats in place, it has 17.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row. Fold down the third row, and you get 43.5 cubic feet of space; if you can afford to fold down all of the back seats, you get a generous 75.6 cubic feet of space.

The Subaru Ascent is the answer to Subaru people’s desire for a bigger Outback with 3-row seating. The most family-friendly Subaru has enough seats for the whole family to come along on off-road adventures, but it’s just as suitable for the daily suburban commute. When it comes to the practical stuff, this SUV checks a lot of boxes for a lot of families, including standard all-wheel drive (AWD), the essential infotainment tech, good resale value, and some of the best safety scores in its class. For those who want all of the Subaru charm in a practical family hauler, the Ascent is a unique option in its class.

Available as a 4-door Gran Coupe or a 2-door Coupe, the subcompact luxury 2026 BMW 2 Series is the most affordable new BMW car.

The 2026 228 Gran Coupe enjoys 241 horsepower, supplied by a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. This is a decent amount of power for a subcompact car and can dispatch the sprint from standstill to 60 mph in a pleasant 6.1 seconds. That’s about the same as the 201-hp Audi A3, and around a second quicker than the 200-hp Acura Integra.
The 228 Gran Coupe xDrive variant tends to be popular among buyers and hits 60 mph in 5.8 seconds. The 2026 M235 xDrive Gran Coupe has a punchy 312 hp and needs only 4.7 seconds to reach 60 mph.
The thing about any 2 Series is that it’s poised and nimble, as if it were made especially for canyon roads, with quick steering and confidence-inspiring brakes. We also found the ride quality of the Gran Coupe to be surprisingly pliant. Both Gran Coupe variants have an adaptive M suspension as standard — we love this setup for its balance of suppleness and precision. A Comfort suspension is a no-cost option. Test-drive both to see which you prefer.
The Coupes (rather than the Gran Coupes) have either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. This will make a bigger difference on a track — but on public roads at sensible speeds, either model can be hugely enjoyable. We also noticed perceptible differences between the driving modes. And yes, we decided to keep the cars in Sport mode for the sharpened responses. The 230i hits 60 mph in 5.5 seconds, shaving off two-tenths with all-wheel drive.
BMW adds an adaptive M Sport suspension to the M240i Coupe, and this model is a great enthusiast’s choice without stretching to an M2. It reaches 60 mph in 4.5 seconds (RWD) or 4.1 seconds (AWD). <h3>Fuel Economy</h3>
The 228 xDrive Gran Coupe achieves an impressive 30 mpg in combined city/highway driving. We expect the front-drive 228 Gran Coupe to improve on that by about a mile per gallon. The M235 xDrive Gran Coupe returns 27 mpg combined.
The 230i xDrive Coupe (with all-wheel drive) achieves 28 mpg combined. Add another couple of miles per gallon with rear-wheel drive. The M240i Coupe achieves 26 mpg combined, regardless of the number of driven wheels.
For comparison, the base version of the Acura Integra runs to 33 mpg combined, and an entry-level Audi A3 is rated at 28 mpg combined.

Two Body Styles

In our opinion, big grilles only work on big cars, if they work at all. The 2 Series is small, and BMW has decided against anything radical here, adopting a mature and fairly conservative look instead. The Gran Coupe is a 4-door model, while the Coupe is a proper coupe with two doors and that more classic profile of a (relatively) long nose and short tail. For what it’s worth, we like them both.
The optional M Sport Professional package includes a black rear spoiler and upgraded brakes with red or blue calipers.

Engines 
Although BMW makes some great 6-cylinder and 8-cylinder engines, even the 4-cylinder units deliver their goods in a pleasing manner. The ones in the 2026 2 Series seem to have a little more muscle than their stated specifications (BMW tends to do that).
BMW Curved Display 
This standard feature includes a configurable 12.3-inch driver information display and a 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen for other functions — all in one curved unit. It brings a great high-tech feel to the cabin.
Performance Control 
This feature is BMW terminology for brake-based torque vectoring. The outside rear wheel goes around a bend faster than its counterpart on the inside, making cornering as efficient and stable as possible. It’s standard across the 2 Series range.
Technology package 
We’d be inclined to select this optional bundle to gain a 360-degree camera system, a head-up display, and augmented reality for the navigation system.
Driving Assistance Professional package 
Tech like lane-changing assistance, evasive steering assistance, and the Traffic Jam Assist function will alleviate the grind of long freeway stretches and stop/go conditions. They’re all in this optional package.
Active Front Seats 
Another helpful option for long trips, these seats employ subtle up/down and side-to-side movements to keep the spine in motion and exercise specific back muscles.

Intimate Interior

As the most affordable new BMW, the 2026 2 Series still has an upscale cabin with quality materials, and we appreciate the well-considered layout. Space up front is fine. We’ve also found the seats comfortable, bringing plenty of support for the sides and under the thighs.
Heated front seats are standard, and there are four color choices apiece for either BMW’s SensaTec simulated leather or the real stuff. A few wood trims are available in all Coupes, and carbon-fiber trim is offered in the M240i. Air vents are enlivened by multicolored ambient lighting. At the same time, controls for climate functions plus seat and steering wheel heating (where fitted) are accessed through the infotainment touchscreen or by voice activation.
There are four seats in the Coupe, five in the Gran Coupe if you count that little middle seat in the back. The Gran Coupe has 34.4 inches of rear legroom, an advantage of about a couple of inches over the Coupe. However, that’s still not a lot for an adult of average size, and rear headroom in either model is hardly plentiful.
The Gran Coupe has a luggage area of 12 cubic feet, and its 40/20/40-split folding rear seats enable some cargo-carrying versatility. The Coupe also has 40/20/40 rear seats, although its trunk space is just 10 cubic feet. For reference, the Audi A3’s trunk measures 10.9 cubic feet. The Acura Integra’s liftback allowed us to fit in a mountain bike &#8212; with the back seats folded, of course.

We should mention up front that the 2 Series is the smallest car made by <a href="https://www.kbb.com/bmw/">BMW</a>, so some people will already be contemplating something bigger. We get it — that’s why clothes are in S, M, L, etc. If the 2 Series could shape up as a good fit, however, you’ll find a car tailor-made for fun, delivering that inimitable BMW experience in a subcompact size.
The 2 Series offers two body styles, a range of excellent engines, and all-wheel drive. Even though the car is small, there’s still a good amount of choice.

We recommend the 228 Gran Coupe, because it’s relatively affordable and more practical than the 2-door Coupe. If necessary, go for all-wheel drive, but front-wheel drive is still capable of handling a lot of bad weather.
Rivals include the <a href="https://www.kbb.com/audi/a3/">Audi A3</a> and the <a href="https://www.kbb.com/acura/integra/">Acura Integra</a> — both 4-door models. The Acura begins at a lower price, while the Audi is more in the BMW ballpark. A couple of possible left-field alternatives could be the <a href="https://www.kbb.com/toyota/gr-supra/">Toyota GR Supra</a> coupe (a joint project with the BMW Z4 and built in Austria), which is more expensive than the 2 Series (except for the M2), or the <a href="https://www.kbb.com/mini/hardtop-2-door/2025/">Mini Cooper Hardtop</a> John Cooper Works, priced similarly to the 2.

The 4-door 2026 228 Gran Coupe has a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine making 241 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Front-wheel drive is the setup in the 228, and all-wheel drive comes in the 228 xDrive.
The M235 xDrive Gran Coupe also has a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. This one generates 312 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque and drives all four wheels.
The 2-door 230i Coupe employs a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine making 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. This power goes to the rear wheels. The 230i xDrive Coupe has all-wheel drive.
A turbocharged 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine propels the M240i with 382 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque going to either the rear wheels or all four if there’s an xDrive suffix.
Most 2 Series models have 8-speed automatic transmissions. The M2 (reviewed separately) offers a 6-speed manual.
<h3>4-Year/50,000-Mile Warranty</h3>
BMW’s new-vehicle and powertrain warranties last four years or 50,000 miles, whichever happens first. These terms are typical among European luxury car makers. Roadside assistance is included for that period, but with unlimited mileage. Scheduled maintenance is free for three years or 36,000 miles, which is less typical.
<h3>Safety Ratings</h3>
This generation of 2 Series Gran Coupe had been named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (<a href="https://www.iihs.org/ratings/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IIHS</a>), the institute’s second-highest accolade. In an updated test, the car still took a top score of Good. Standard safety equipment includes forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring.

There’s comfort and composure in equal measure, and the car feels nicely poised. We’d be happy to run commutes and longer trips alike in the Prius Plug-in Hybrid. A more confident initial bite on the brake pedal would be welcome, though.
The cabin is mostly quiet, with just some tire noise coming up while driving over rough surfaces. That’s to be expected since these are special tires with low rolling resistance that contribute to overall fuel economy.
When checking the rearview mirror, the slope of the back window creates a small aperture, so outward vision isn’t great.
