The 2022 Nissan Frontier is the all-new third-generation of the company’s midsize pickup truck. It goes on sale later this summer to take on segment mainstays like the Toyota Tacoma, Chevrolet Colorado, and Ford Ranger.
Based on the existing boxed-ladder frame, the 2022 Frontier features an all-new body, interior, and cargo box. The new powertrain first appeared on the 2021 model.
Styled in California and constructed in Mississippi, the Frontier features a fresh look that maintains the toughness of previous models. This newest Nissan is distinguished by a massive grille with a new chiseled hood and flared fenders. Aggressively styled LED headlamps, LED daylight running lights, LED fog lights, and Lava red grille accents complete the look. At the rear, a new dampened tailgate assist is standard on all models.
Taller walls on the bed offer more cargo capacity, while the cargo floor remains at its previous height for ease of loading. The Frontier comes in a King Cab (extended) and roomier Crew Cab. The King Cab is equipped with a 6-foot bed, while the Crew Cab features a shorter 5-foot box. The mid-range Crew Cab SV LWB offers the option of the 6-foot bed.
The 3.8-liter V6 makes 310 horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque and mates to a 9-speed automatic transmission. Frontier comes in rear- or 4-wheel drive configurations, the latter with a 2-speed transfer case to enhance off-road capability. The towing capacity is 6,720 pounds and comes with standard trailer sway control.
Four Nissan Frontier Trim Levels
The 2022 Nissan Frontier is offered in four different trim levels. These include the base Frontier S and Frontier SV, available in either King or Crew Cab and in 2WD or 4WD. The Frontier Pro-X is a 2WD performance version, while the Frontier Pro-4X is exclusively 4WD.
Pricing starts at $29,340 for the Nissan Frontier S King Cab model and tops out with the Nissan Frontier Crew Cab Pro-4X, which checks in at $37,240 before any options. Fully loaded, the Frontier PRO-4X with all available packages (Premium $2,790; Convenience $1,990; and Technology, $990) will price out at $43,010, with availability by the end of summer. The destination fee is $1,150.
Although the PRO-4X is the king of the (wild) Frontier, we think the Nissan Frontier Crew Cab SV offers the best value for those who appreciate 4WD in a package that is at home both on- and off-road. Ordering the Frontier SV Crew Cab 4×4 LWB with the standard- rather than short bed, the exclusive 3.8-liter V6, and 4-wheel drive powertrain will cost you $200 less ($37,040) than the off-road-oriented PRO-4X model but provide a longer bed and a better ride. Naturally, additional option packages will add to the bottom line
