GMC has issued a recall for 1,120 Canyon AT4X AEV pickups from model years 2024-2026 because their airbags could inflate with more force than intended in low-speed collisions, risking passenger injuries.
Many of today’s airbags are two-stage models. They inflate with less force in low-speed crashes and more force in high-speed crashes, using sensors to detect the force of an accident. That protects occupants by ensuring that the airbag cushions their bodies at the correct speed to minimize injuries.
GMC tells federal safety officials that the software that calibrates those forces may not function correctly in some AT4X AEV models. A GM engineer recently noticed that AT4X AEV models use the same formula as non-AEV models to control airbag inflation. AEV models sit higher on larger tires and weigh more than other Canyon models, so they need a separate formula.
Dealers will update the software to fix the issue. Software updates are among the quickest service appointments.
By law, dealers never charge for recall repairs.
Manufacturers recall many cars, often more than once, during their lifespan. Automakers try to contact every owner but don’t always reach them all. Discover if your vehicle has any outstanding recalls with the easy-to-use vehicle identification number (VIN) tool at our recall center.
