Volvo Already Has Plans to Replace EX30 Electric SUV

Volvo initially positioned the EX30 as an entry-level electric vehicle (EV) in its lineup. An affordable price tag, impressive power, and a stylish design stood out for the vehicle. However, its lifespan was cut short. After only two model years, the EX30 will be discontinued in the U.S. market.

Many external factors played a role in this. The EX30 was meant to be an affordable entry into the EV market, initially priced at around $35,000. However, tariffs went into effect, and the base price rose to over $46,000 — making it much harder to sell.

Volvo’s New EV Plans

With the EX30 moving out of the picture for the U.S. market, Volvo seems to have redirected its attention toward a fresh start. According to multiple outlets including The Verge, Luis Rezende, president of Volvo Cars America, spilled the news to reporters at a roundtable during the EX60 launch.

There, he stated that yes, the EX30’s exit was affected by tariffs and price increases. However, another deciding factor was the decision to introduce a brand-new EV in 2027 that will be very similar to what the EX30 offered.

Rezende said the price point won’t be exactly the same, but it will be close. Not many details were provided, but Rezende reportedly described the new EV as “fun to drive” and “will deliver a lot of good things in a bigger space.”

Looking Ahead

With the wider status of EVs facing potential headwinds, we think it’s a good move for Volvo to try again with another affordable EV option rather than pushing the EX30 at its current price. Many Americans are already hesitant to buy EVs, so a high price tag isn’t going to help the case.

This new EV isn’t Volvo’s only addition to its electric lineup. The EX60, an electric midsize SUV, debuted earlier this year and will go on sale this summer. It will be interesting to see whether this release, or any other models in the current lineup, will influence Volvo’s next big drop.
