Living up to the promise of its pre-show hype, the Volkswagen New Midsize Coupe Concept revealed at Auto China 2014 sets the stage for an upcoming segment-straddling 4-door with a decidedly sporting flavor. Spun from the automaker’s new MQB modular transverse platform, it bridges current A- and B-category offerings being shorter than a Jetta but even wider than a Passat. Although specifically designed for the Chinese market, the Volkswagen did note that the car introduces some new front and rear design themes that are likely to turn up in other models.

Key features introduced on this new VW include 3D-look LED headlamps/taillamps/DRL and new LED directional signals that integrate into the lower grille trim. Although the car’s crisply tailored sheetmetal, short overhangs and rakish proportions also are good bets to see production reality, those 20-inch alloys and 245/40 tires seem less likely to make the volume-build cut.

As noted earlier, the Volkswagen New Midsize Coupe Concept is fitted with a 220-horsepower turbocharged TSI 4-cylinder gasoline engine that drives the front wheels via a 7-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission. VW says it can sprint from 0-60 mph in less than 6.5 seconds and top out at 152 mph but still return almost 37 mpg on the European combined cycle.
