Volkswagen ID.4 Back on Sale

Volkswagen announced Friday that it has lifted a stop-sale order that forced dealers to halt sales of its ID.4 electric vehicle (EV).

The ID.4 is a midsize SUV our editors like for its spacious cabin, reasonable price (when applying the $7,500 federal EV rebate), and an inventive LED light bar at the base of the windshield that communicates basic information in the driver’s peripheral vision and gives it a hint of personality.

The company paused sales in September after a pair of recalls. Owners reported doors popping open on the road, leading to a limited recall in April 2023 and a larger effort in September.

Volkswagen traced the problem to a faulty seal that could let water into door handles, where it could short-circuit the lock mechanism. The company now says dealers have the parts they need “to repair customer vehicles that were subject to the recall and will be able to sell ID.4 vehicles that were in existing stock, once repaired.”

VW adds, “Assembly of the ID.4 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, is set to resume in the coming weeks.”
