Volkswagen has unveiled the second generation of its Atlas flagship SUV at the New York International Auto Show. The same convenience, comfort, and cargo space that put the Atlas on the map have been upgraded for a premium feel.
For the Family
As with the first-generation Atlas that arrived in 2018, this 3-row midsize SUV is still very much family-oriented. It can seat up to seven and now comes standard with a power liftgate, front and rear park distance control, and rear sunshades. New air vents in the B-pillar further aid in keeping rear passengers comfortable. A new center airbag is added for extra safety.
A Stronger, Sculpted Exterior

When it comes to looks, Volkswagen opted for a sculpted, sleeker exterior for the all-new sheet metal on its largest SUV. Three new paint colors give customers more interesting choices for the Atlas: Sacramento Green, Sandstone, and Blackberry.
Lighting Is the New Chrome

Volkswagen believes lighting is the new chrome. So much so that the Atlas is illuminated inside and out. Double-stacked LED headlights, double light lines, an illuminated badge, animated turn signals, and light-up door handles draw attention to the Atlas from the outside. On the inside, ambient lighting dots the doors and dashboard.
An Organic Feel
The interior of the new Atlas has an organic feel with wave-like patterns and real wood textures. Three interior palettes are available, ranging from gray to black to wine. Higher trims boast supple Nappa or Varenna leather upholstery.

Dialing It In
Even the tech is designed to make driving more convenient. The driver experience dial controls volume, atmosphere, and drive mode, similar to the setup in the Tiguan. The infotainment screen groes to 15 inches on all but the base trim, which uses a 12.9-inch unit.
Better Power and Efficiency, Too
The turbocharged 4-cylinder engine of the 2027 Atlas now makes 282 horsepower, up from the 269 hp of the last model. That’s the most ever seen on an Atlas. The new engine is also anticipated to provide better fuel economy than the 2026 model, which gets 23 mpg combined. Towing capacity remains the same at 5,000 pounds, and front-wheel drive is standard, with all-wheel drive optional. A hybrid model is expected in the future.
The new 2027 Atlas is built on the MQB Evo architecture, allowing it to maintain its spacious interior. The vehicle is about an inch longer than the outgoing Atlas, and the width, wheelbase, and height remain the same.
“The all‑new 2027 Atlas brings more of what matters: a stronger design, smarter technology, increased power, and a premium feel where it matters most,” says Volkswagen of America president and CEO Kjell Gruner. The 2027 Atlas will be available this fall, with pricing to be announced closer to launch.
