Volkswagen Atlas Shows Off Rugged Peak Edition

The Volkswagen Atlas Peak Edition seen from a front quarter angleThe Volkswagen Atlas Peak Edition is the newest entry in the world of off-roady family SUVs. It’s part of a growing trend of rugged midsize SUVs like the Ford Explorer Timberline, Nissan Pathfinder Rock Creek, and Honda Pilot TrailSport.

In much the same vein as its rivals above, the Volkswagen Atlas Peak Edition is little more than an appearance package. It’s not a hardcore off-roader like the Toyota 4Runner or Jeep Wrangler, but it’s suitable for drivers who need a practical SUV capable of mild off-roading or traversing deep snow. Or maybe you just like the look.

Rugged Exterior

Based on the Atlas Basecamp Concept from 2019, the Peak Edition has new body cladding, unique front and rear fascias, blacked-out exterior trim, and distinctive 18-inch black alloy wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires.

The Atlas Peak Edition is available in two paint colors exclusive to the new trim: Avocado Green and Pure Grey. “Peak Edition” badging with stylized mountain peaks stamps the front sides.

Practical Interior

Step inside the Atlas Peak Edition, and you’ll be welcomed by an equally rugged interior. It uses Titan Black leatherette upholstery with tasteful light grey accents. Naturally, it has orange contrast stitching, seemingly a requirement of any off-road-themed trim. “Peak Edition” branding adorns the steering wheel and the passenger side of the dash.

The Peak Edition is part of a thorough midcycle refresh for the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas. The list of updates includes an updated turbocharged engine, revised styling (especially for this trim), upgraded interior materials, and more standard features.

A few of those standard features we look forward to trying out in the Peak Edition include a 12-inch touchscreen, IQ.Drive driver-assistance tech features, and a wireless charging pad. Standard 3-zone climate control helps keep everyone comfortable.

Family-Friendly Adventurer

The Atlas continues to be one of the most family-friendly midsize SUVs in its class. It has class-leading third-row legroom, plus generous cargo space to boot, making it an appealing minivan alternative. If you like the idea of an SUV with a third row you can actually use but also like the rugged aesthetic that’s getting so popular, then the Atlas Peak Edition is in a sweet spot.

The refreshed Volkswagen Atlas goes on sale in the third quarter of 2023 as a 2024 model. Volkswagen has shared that there will be two Peak Edition trims, and we know one will be based on the SEL 4Motion SUV. Could there be an Atlas Cross Sport Peak Edition in the works?
