Toyota introduced updates to the 2027 GR86 at the FuelFest enthusiasts gathering earlier this week. The enhancements focused on deepening “the connection between driver, car, and road,” elevating “control and confidence,” according to Toyota.
The GR86 is one of the lightest sports cars Toyota develops and is among the few 2-door, affordable sports cars you can still buy new. It was developed in partnership with Subaru, which sells its own version as the BRZ. The “GR” in the Toyota model stands for Gazoo Racing, the automaker’s motorsport division.
The 2027 Toyota GR86 will be offered in both a base and premium trim with a choice of a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission.
New updates include:
- Refining the relationship between accelerator input and torque delivery for a smoother response.
- Widened the chamfer of the shifter between the fourth and fifth gear for a smoother feel.
- Thunder, a new solid gray exterior color that shifts with the light and highlights the sculpted body style of the GR86.
- A new interior color, Cockpit Red, is available for Premium trims.
- Premium models receive a black finish on interior touchpoints.
- The stereo camera’s recognition range nearly doubled, improving vehicle detection.
- Adding a monocular camera helps detect nearby objects at intersections.
- A performance package available on the Premium grades now includes Brembo brakes and SACHS dampers.
- The base grade comes with six-way adjustable black GR-embossed fabric seats with sport fabric side bolsters.
Owners of the GR86 can put these updates to the test with a complimentary 1-year membership to the National Auto Sport Association. In addition to the updates above, the GR86 retains several features that make Toyotas safe. All GR86 models come standard with the Active Safety Suite and ToyotaCare.
The 2027 GR86 arrives at dealerships this summer. Pricing will be released closer to the car’s on-sale date.
