Chevrolet revealed the redesigned 2027 Silverado 1500 with two new V8 engines and an upgraded TurboMax 4-cylinder. These trucks get up to 481 horsepower and can tow up to 13,700 pounds. The new truck is more powerful than the Silverado it replaces, but fuel economy drops slightly as a result.
Configurations Customers Are Actually Buying
According to Joe Singer, a GM spokesperson, the 2027 Silverado was engineered around the configurations customers are actually buying, including lifted suspensions, larger tires, and higher-trim levels. “The new figures better represent the trucks that customers are interested in buying, as opposed to the less-equipped versions that may have been tested before,” says Singer.
By the Numbers: 2026 vs. 2027 Engine Output
| Engine | 2026 Silverado | 2027 Silverado | Change |
| 2.7-liter TurboMax | 310 hp / 430 lb-ft | 350 hp / 455 lb-ft | +40 hp / +25 lb-ft |
| V8 (standard) | 5.3-liter V8: 355 hp / 383 lb-ft | 5.7-liter V8: 402 hp / 428 lb-ft | +47 hp / +45 lb-ft |
| V8 (optional) | 6.2-liter V8: 420 hp / 460 lb-ft | 6.6-liter V8: 481 hp / 501 lb-ft | +61 hp / +41 lb-ft |

Fuel Economy: Context Matters
A GM spokesperson confirmed to KBB.com that EPA-certified fuel economy ratings for the 2027 Silverado’s new V8 engines are:
- 5.7-liter V8, 2WD: 15 city / 19 highway / 17 combined
- 5.7-liter V8, 4WD: 15 city / 18 highway / 16 combined
- 6.6-liter V8, 4WD: 14 city / 18 highway / 15 combined
- 6.6-liter V8 ZR2, 4WD: 13 city / 15 highway / 14 combined
- 3.0-liter Duramax diesel, 2WD: 22 city / 27 highway / 24 combined
GM also noted that fuel economy figures for the enhanced 2.7-liter TurboMax are not yet available because that powertrain will launch later in the model year and its certification process has not been completed.
2026 vs. 2027 Fuel Economy
| Engine | 2026 Best EPA Rating | 2027 Rating |
| 2.7-liter TurboMax | 20 mpg combined (2WD) | Not yet certified |
| 5.3-liter/5.7-liter V8 | 17 mpg combined (2WD) | 17 mpg combined (2WD), 16 mpg combined (4WD) |
| 6.2-liter/6.6-liter V8 | 17 mpg combined (4WD) | 15 mpg combined (4WD), 14 mpg combined (ZR2) |
| 3.0-liter Duramax diesel | 25 mpg combined (2WD) | 24 mpg combined (2WD) |
The Diesel Remains the Efficiency Champion
If fuel economy remains your top priority, the answer hasn’t changed. GM says the 3.0-liter Duramax diesel remains the most efficient engine in the full-size truck segment, delivering 27 mpg highway and 24 mpg combined in 2WD form. The company also estimates more than 900 miles of available highway range when equipped with the available larger fuel tank.
