Toyota takes 2013 global auto sales crown with 9.98 million units

Narrowly missing the magic 10-million mark, Toyota Motor Corporation nonetheless managed to retain its status as the world’s top-selling vehicle manufacturer on the strength of a 9.98 million annual total. That was good enough to top 2012 runner-up General Motors, which remained in the number two spot with 9.71 million vehicles sold in 2013. Rounding out the global power trio was the Volkswagen Group. Although VW won’t release an official final sales tally until mid-March, it has projected a preliminary total near 9.7 million. TMC anticipates moving the sales benchmark even higher in 2014. According to a statement released by the automaker, it expects to bump that figure to a new all-time high of 10.32 million.
