Toyota Motor Corporation has issued a worldwide voluntary recall that covers its 2010 Prius Hybrid and Prius Plug-in models as well as the Lexus HS 250h Hybrid (and its Japan-only Toyota Sai cousin) to update software that controls the operation of their anti-lock brake systems. Here in America, the action will impact 137,000 of the latest Gen III Prius models as well as 14,500 Lexus HS250h Hybrids, which share common ABS hardware modules but have vehicle-specific software.
Toyota plans to start sending out recall notices to Prius owners next week and will begin contacting HS 250h owners sometime later in the month. Customers will be directed to take their vehicles to a local dealer for the software update, a process that’s expected to take about 40 minutes. All 2010 Prius models manufactured since late January already have this revised brake-control software installed. A corresponding update for the Lexus HS 250h is now being finalized, and the automaker expects to announce both a factory and a dealer fix shortly.
