Toyota Promises 2 New EVs, 1 New Hybrid This Year

Toyota will release two new electric vehicles (EVs) and one new hybrid in the U.S. by the end of 2021. The company previously announced a plan to make 40 percent of its sales electric by 2025, does not currently sell an EV in America.

Toyota offered almost no details on the planned vehicles, revealing only that one will be an SUV. Toyota teased a battery-powered compact SUV planned for the European market last December, revealing only a sketch.

The new electric vehicles will be based on a single platform Toyota calls e-TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture). The platform allows for several different battery configurations and built in front-, rear-, or all-wheel drive. Toyota says it plans to show off a battery capable of powering 600 miles of driving on a single charge later this year.
