Back from its successful record-setting class win in August at the 2012 Pikes Peak International Hillclimb, the Toyota Motorsport Group’s electric-powered TMG EV P002 destroyed another iconic lap record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife venue. The latest iteration of this ultra-clean sports racer developed by the firm’s European motorsport operation turned a blistering 7:22.293 time around the 12.93-mile "Green Hell" circuit, besting the existing EV mark held by its TMG EV P001 predecessor by over 25 seconds.
Also based on a modified Radical chassis, the TMG EV P002 is fitted with a pair of axial flux motors energized by a 42kWh lithium-ceramic battery pack. The motors develop a combined 469 horsepower that gets sent to the rear wheels of this super-green stormer via a single-speed transmission. For the TMG EV P002’s latest assault on the absolute EV record at the Nordschleife circuit, a gearing change upped the car’s top speed from 149 to 158 mph.
As it did at Pikes Peak, the team made use of a new TMG DC Quick Charger that was developed in partnership with Schneider Electric. Created specifically to meet the needs of recharging an electric race car at tracks that don’t offer reliable access to the grid power, TMG believes that this new charger "represents a major step forward for electric motorsport."
