As part of a larger global action, Toyota Motor Sales announced a voluntary recall of approximately 700,000 model-year 2010-2014 Prius vehicles in the U.S. to update the motor/generator control ECU and hybrid control ECU software on certain models. While there have been no reported incidents connected to this issue, Toyota stated that current software settings could create a “thermal stress” condition which could potentially damage some transistors. Under most circumstances, that situation would illuminate warning lights and put the vehicle into a ‘fail-safe” mode. However, in rare cases, the entire hybrid system could shut down and bring the car to a stop.

Toyota also issued a voluntary recall on approximately 260,000 additional 2012 Toyota RAV4, 2012-2013 Toyota Tacoma, and 2012-2013 Lexus RX 350 models in America for an updating of their skid control ECU software to prevent the intermittent shutdown of their Vehicle Stability Control, Anti-lock Brake, and Traction Control systems. Here too, no accidents or injuries have been reported and Toyota notes that even if those systems become inoperative, standard braking remains fully functional.

Owners of all affected vehicles will be notified by mail when they can visit their local Toyota/Lexus dealers to have the software updated free of charge.
