Toyota Camry sales top 10 million total units in the U.S.

Toyota has announced that cumulative sales volume of its perennial best-selling Camry model have now eclipsed the 10 million mark in America. Introduced here in 1983 when it accounted for a modest 52,651 units, the Camry’s U.S. tally hit 404,886 in 2012. During the course of the past three decades, this mainstay of the automaker’s lineup has racked up nearly 20 percent of all Toyota sales in this country. For the past 11, the Camry also has reigned as America’s top-selling sedan.

In 1988, Toyota began assembling most Camry models for this market in its Georgetown, Kentucky, plant. With U.S.-sourced content of the current 7th-generation variant now standing at 75 percent, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recognizes it as the country’s most "American-made" car. Toyota estimated that there are approximately 6.4 million Camrys on the road here today – including 773 of the original Gen 1 model.
