The 2027 model year marks five years since Lexus introduced the second-generation NX compact luxury SUV, which means it’s time for a refresh. Lexus is moving the second-best-seller to a hybrid-only format, offering hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants, and the new model year brings a range of other improvements to the SUV’s technology features, driver-assistance systems, and driving dynamics.
Lexus is cutting the gas-only NX for 2027 and has issued several improvements for the hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains. Both use a new e-axle assembly that combines the transaxle, electric motor, and power control unit in a single component. Updated electronics and new silicon carbide semiconductors help boost drivetrain efficiency.
In plug-in hybrid versions, a new lithium-ion battery offers an 8% boost in output and a 30% greater capacity. The setup enables DC fast charging for those variants, and Lexus quotes an all-electric driving range of more than 40 miles. There’s also a new electronic all-wheel-drive (AWD) system that offers always-on performance and improved traction in snow and other conditions.
Exterior styling changes include new black accents, updated headlights with integrated daytime running lights, and a new taillight design featuring L-shaped lighting elements. Lexus also added illuminated badges, and two new colors are available for 2027: Shaded Ivy and Incognito.
F Sport trims come with unique exterior elements, including a front under spoiler, piano black accents, and exclusive 20-inch wheels.
All trims now receive a 14-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. The system runs on Lexus’ new interface, which is more responsive and easier to use than earlier versions. A Mark Levinson audio system is available, and the Luxury and F Sport trims offer interior “themes” that combine lighting, sound, temperature, and fragrance to create different moods.
The 2027 NX comes standard with the new Lexus Safety System+ 4.0. It includes automatic emergency braking, forward collision warnings, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, and more. The pre-collision system now uses a camera and millimeter-wave radar that offer enhanced performance, which should help the NX achieve crash-test scores similar to those of earlier models. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the 2026 NX with a Top Safety Pick +, its highest honor.
