Surprise! Tesla’s reveal of the Roadster has been delayed again. Tesla initially planned to hold the event on Oct. 1. Texas weather apparently had different plans, consequently prompting the company to postpone the event.
In a post on X, the official Tesla account announced that the Roadster event has been rescheduled for Oct. 15.
A Reminder of What Tesla Promised
Since unveiling the Roadster in 2017, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has made several ambitious claims about the vehicle’s performance that remain unverified.
The second-generation high-performance sports car is a revival of Tesla‘s original Roadster that sold from 2008 to 2012. When Tesla unveiled the new Roadster prototype in 2017, the company claimed it would offer more than 620 miles of range and a top speed exceeding 250 mph. Nearly a decade ago at that unveiling, it was shared that the first 1,000 units would be called the Founder Series and would cost $250,000. Reservations still require $50,000.
Maybe most interesting is the claim of racing from zero-to-60 mph in under one second with the help of rocket-thrusting technology from Musk’s SpaceX company. A flying car in 2026? Maybe society’s earlier predictions of us were right.
Regardless, even if this technology works, it’s highly unlikely to be street legal, so it’ll probably need to be reserved for the track.
Tesla has not provided many details on how this system would work in a production vehicle, so we will have to wait to see if any additional details emerge on Oct. 15.
A Long History of Delays
This setback is just the latest in a series of delays in the vehicle’s release. After its unveiling in 2017, Roadster production was supposed to begin in 2020.
Two years later, in 2022, Musk said the delay was due to parts constraints. In 2024, he stated that a launch was expected in 2025. Lo and behold, the vehicle is still in limbo.
This history is likely why this recent delay is no surprise to most.
What Happens Next?
For now, the Roadster remains part of Tesla’s future product plans, though questions remain about its final specifications and production timeline nearly a decade after its debut.
Tesla’s Roadster webpage features a brand-new countdown to the event. As the clock ticks down, we might actually get one step closer to the long-awaited Roadster reveal.
