Tesla has recalled 2,431 Cybertruck electric pickups because they can lose all drive power.
The company tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), “On affected vehicles, a fault in the drive inverter may cause it to stop producing torque.”
The company says the fault is limited to trucks built with a particular batch of inverters, all manufactured between November 6, 2023, and July 30, 2024. Tesla is aware of at least five trucks that have lost drive power this way, but the problem has not caused accidents or injuries.
“No warning occurs prior to the loss of propulsion. However, when the driver loses the ability to apply torque, they will immediately receive a visual alert on the user interface, with an instruction to safely pull over the vehicle to the side of the road,” the company says.
Technicians will replace the inverters to fix the problem. Recall repairs are always free.
