Tesla has issued a recall for 1,849,638 vehicles because they may not notify their drivers when their hoods aren’t properly latched. An unlatched hood could open while driving, obstructing the driver’s view.

Recalled models include the:

Tesla found the problem while investigating “customer complaints of unintended hood opening events on Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in China.” It has found “three warranty claims or field reports” in the U.S.

The company tells federal safety officials that if a customer opens the hood and closes it without fully engaging the latch, software should trigger a warning. That warning can fail.

Recall repairs, by law, are free. Automakers recall many cars, often more than once, during their lifespans. When the cars require a physical repair, the automakers try to contact every owner to bring them in. But they don’t always reach them all. In this case, Tesla will fix the issue remotely.
