Tesla Pauses Production of Model 3, Y

Tesla has temporarily halted the production of two cars, including its best-selling model. No one outside the company knows why.

Bloomberg reports that Tesla has stopped production of its Model 3 (the best-selling electric vehicle (EV) in America) and Model Y (the second best-selling EV in America). Workers at Tesla’s Fremont, California assembly plant have been told their lines will be down until at least March 7.

The reason for the shutdown isn’t clear. Tesla has no public relations department, often leaving the press in the dark until CEO Elon Musk decides to tweet an explanation for major changes.

Automakers are curtailing production of many cars due to a worldwide shortage of microchips. Tesla warned investors last month that the semiconductor shortfall might impact production.
