If you buy a Tesla Model 3 from the company’s inventory of already-built cars this month, Tesla will throw in three months of free electricity. The offer does not appear to apply if you place an order for a custom-built car.
The offer appeared on the Tesla website over the weekend. Tesla doesn’t operate a public relations department or answer reporters’ questions. So we’re often left watching the company’s website for new developments.
Tesla Has Inventory to Sell Off
That website now includes separate buttons for ordering a car or buying one from inventory. Click on the inventory page, and you’ll see a listing of cars available for sale along with a note that buyers get “3 months of free unlimited Supercharging if ordered and delivered between June 14 and June 30, 2023.” There is no equivalent offer on the custom order page.
This one is in keeping with a series of moves that have seen Tesla acting more like a typical automaker in recent weeks.
Tesla once faced a constant backlog of orders and built every car to a particular customer’s specifications. Now, it appears to have a stock of pre-built Model 3 sedans to sell. The company offered cash discounts for the first time to help sell them last month.
CEO Elon Musk also recently announced that Tesla will start advertising soon – a first.
The discounts have created some remarkable deals. By applying the incentives and stacking federal, state, and local government incentives, some California buyers can now purchase a $40,240 Model 3 for just $19,560.
Maybe a Matter of Strategy; Maybe a Sign of a New Model 3
The incentives are part of a larger strategy – Musk has said that Tesla is willing to make little to no money on many EV sales in order to get as many customers as possible for software downloads later.
It may also hint at a need to clear out Model 3 stock ahead of a new car. Rumors say Musk is close to unveiling the model’s first redesign this summer.
