Tesla Increases Model Y Price

The Tesla Model Y is the best-selling electric vehicle in America, but its price keeps going up. Overnight, Tesla bumped the Model Y’s sticker up another $1,000 – at least the 8th price increase so far in 2021.

Both trim levels – the Long Range and Performance editions – are affected. The new prices are:

  • Model Y Long Range $58,990
  • Model Y Performance $63,990

All Teslas also require a $1,200 destination charge.

In January, Model Y prices started at $51,200.

This latest price increase does not affect the Model 3 sedan, which shares a platform with the Model Y.

Tesla has no public relations department to explain the price changes. Mid-stream price changes are normal for Tesla. While most automakers build cars in model years, Tesla doesn’t. Instead, it gradually improves cars during a production run. So periodic price adjustments can represent improved materials or new features.

They can also result from simple market conditions. New cars contain hundreds of microchips that control everything from engine timing to cabin temperature. A worldwide shortage of microchips has left automakers pausing or slowing production of many cars this year. Tesla has been quite successful in keeping its factories running, but that may have required some behind-the-scenes cost increases.

Still, Tesla’s prices have been on a dramatic climb all year. The brand’s flagship Model S sedan has seen its price jump by more than $25,000 so far in 2021.

Shortages also impact delivery times. Tesla’s website shows that a buyer ordering a Model Y Performance can expect to receive it in January. Buyers ordering a Model Y Long Range, however, will have to wait until June for delivery.
