Subaru has recalled 5,603 Forester SUVs from model year 2026 because their rear hatches could collapse when open. If the falling tailgate hits someone, it could cause an injury.
The company tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that “The affected vehicles may have been manufactured with an incorrect and/or incorrectly oriented rear gate stay bracket.” That can cause the strut that holds the tailgate open to detach.
The company is not aware of any injuries related to the problem or any reports of it occurring in a customer’s car. Factory technicians discovered it during an inspection.
Dealers will fix it by inspecting the brackets and, if necessary, replacing them.
Recall repairs are always free.
Automakers recall many cars to fix safety defects, sometimes more than once. While automakers try to reach every owner to ask them to bring the vehicle in for repair, they rarely get them all. Millions of vehicles on American roads need free recall repairs. To find out if your car is one of them, check the easy VIN tool at our recall center.
