Subaru has announced prices for its 2022 Outback and Legacy lineup. The news comes with a big surprise – the offroad-oriented Outback Wilderness edition is significantly less expensive than many had expected.
The Outback Wilderness is expected to be the first of a sub-brand of Subaru Wilderness models, which will offer off-road-centered versions of several Subaru cars. It features improved ground clearance, redesigned bumpers allowing for greater approach and departure angles, skid plates, and similar features off-road enthusiasts look for. It is visually distinguished with a unique, tougher look that features black body cladding, orange badges, and a glare-reducing matte black hood panel.
Given all the changes, analysts had expected the Wilderness to be the most expensive Outback. But it starts at $38,120, slotting it in the middle of the lineup. It’s also one of the cheaper ways to get the Outback’s more powerful, 260 horsepower, turbocharged 4-cylinder engine.
Those shopping for an Outback might find the Wilderness a reasonably priced option. Those looking for an off-road crossover, though, will note that it is more expensive than off-road-based competitors like the Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk or Ford Bronco Sport Badlands.
