Automakers love to get mysterious. Kia this week quietly released a teaser video of a new car with no further explanation. It looks like nothing so much as an electric tribute to the retired Kia Stinger.

The Stinger, sold from model years 2018 through 2023, was an aggressive-looking sedan that won a cult following with a choice of 300- or 368-horsepower engines, sporty tuning, and high-performance Brembo brakes.

Sport sedans are common in luxury price ranges, but rare from mainstream marques like Kia. The Stinger became a critical darling but fell victim to the general American shift away from sedans, with production canceled after 2023.

Kia has revealed no details at all about the new car. It appeared on a YouTube channel maintained by the company’s global public relations operation, labeled only “Kia Concept.”

We think it’s electric, based chiefly on its dimensions. A very short hood leaves little room for an engine. The car’s proportions suggest electric motors instead.

Automakers have an easy time converting electric platforms to produce new models. The platform under the EV6 is already capable of Stinger-beating performance. There’s a GT version of that SUV that produces up to 641 hp.

We’ve reached out to Kia to request additional information. There are reasons for enthusiasts to be skeptical.

The car may never be more than a concept. Even if Kia does build it, it may not make it to the U.S. market.

However, Kia is aware that the Stinger still has a loyal fan base. An EV version might make sense someday.
