Small Fire at Tesla’s Fremont Factory Under Control

Firefighters responded to a fire at the Fremont, California factory that builds Tesla’s entry-level Model 3 sedan. Local news footage showed white smoke billowing from the roof of the building late Thursday afternoon. But the fire appears to have been put out quickly.

A fire department spokesperson told reporters the blaze was caused by “a combination of molten aluminum and hydraulic fluid,” and was restricted to a single stamping machine. There are no reports of injuries.

Production at the factory was halted without explanation in late February but resumed on March 7. It is not yet clear whether the fire will lead to a production delay. Tesla closed its public relations department last fall, so the media is often left waiting for CEO Elon Musk to tweet answers to production questions.
