Volkswagen’s ID. Buzz electric minivan is still on dealership lots, but the company hasn’t imported new shipments this year. It may not restart shipments anytime soon, either.
Volkswagen has continued to build the van for overseas markets all along. But the company skipped the 2026 model year in the U.S. A new report says it will skip 2027 as well.
Industry publication Automotive News reports, “The people mover will return as a 2028 model year vehicle and skip the 2027 model year.” Volkswagen plans to resume imports of the van, built in Hanover, Germany, in “the first half of 2027,” according to the report.
The ID. Buzz is an all-electric rebirth of the classic love bus – a modern interpretation of a 1960s cultural icon. Our reviewers love its retro-inspired style, and so do onlookers.
We’ve tested the buzz bus several times and found that few vehicles elicit as many waves from neighbors or smiles from strangers. It won the 2025 North American Utility Vehicle of the Year award with its nostalgic appeal and clever quirks like a removable cooler for a center console.
But sales have been plagued by two problems.
One is limited range – few vehicles feel as suited to a road trip, but the ID. Buzz gets just 234 miles between charging sessions.
The other is price – the van is a salute to an affordable classic, but, with a starting price over $60,000, it’s the most expensive thing on the Volkswagen lot today.
So it inspires more smiles than sales. KBB data show that dealers sold just 140 nationwide in August. At that pace, it could take them nearly 8 months to sell out of current stock.
That means interested buyers can still easily find an ID. Buzz for sale today. But it also means Volkswagen has little need to bring more into the country.
