Honda shifted away from its most aggressive electrification plans in favor of less expensive hybrid models, and it could lead to the surprise return of one of its funkiest models: The automaker reportedly plans to revive the Element as a hybrid in 2029.
Industry publication Automotive News reports that Honda plans to start production in the second quarter of 2029. The new Element will target outdoors and adventure enthusiasts, aiming to compete with the Ford Bronco Sport, according to the publication. Honda has not officially weighed in, as automakers usually won’t discuss future products.
While it will reportedly feature a hybrid powertrain not offered during its first run, the new Element is said to retain its quirky, boxy styling. Analysts told Automotive News that the crossover’s look and positioning as an urban-focused, utility-forward model didn’t resonate when the first Element debuted over two decades ago. Still, they said that it would likely be much more warmly received this time around.
Despite the lack of enthusiasm early on, the Element has become a cult favorite since it was last sold for the 2011 model year. Its boxy shape and surprisingly generous interior space have made it a popular option for campers, overlanders, and adventure-seekers.
The original model had wide-opening doors, making it easier to load gear or for people with mobility challenges to enter and exit the vehicle. It also had removable seats, which made it a great camper and utility hauler.
Sam Fiorani, VP of AutoForecast Solutions, told Automotive News that a new Element could carry existing enthusiasts while drawing a new audience. The hybrid powertrain would also improve fuel economy, one of the earlier model’s biggest weaknesses. Price and positioning will also be important metrics that Honda must nail with the launch.
“The new Element should appeal to Ford Bronco Sport buyers who want rugged looks and all-wheel drive (AWD) capability without paying around $45,000. Threading the needle in price and size between the popular CR-V and the affordable HR-V will be key to the success of the new Element,” Fiorani noted.
