The second-generation Porsche Macan will get a dramatic horsepower boost over the current model, near-perfect weight distribution, and be “the sportiest model in its segment,” Porsche says.
Oh, and it won’t have a gasoline engine. Not even as an option.
The Second Macan Will Be Porsche’s Second EV
Porsche has offered details on the upcoming 2024 Macan compact SUV. The second generation of its compact crossover will also be Porsche’s second electric vehicle (EV).
We don’t know what it will look like, but Porsche told reporters this week it will ride on an entirely new EV platform developed with Audi. Called the Premium Platform Electric (PPE), the unit can be scaled up or down to build vehicles for different needs.
It uses an 800-volt architecture like the Taycan, which theoretically provides faster charging times. Porsche aims for the Macan to charge from 5% to 80% in under 25 minutes at a DC fast charger.
RWD or AWD, Up to 603 HP
The platform can accept rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive designs, using one electric motor or two. The maximum output available on the Macan at launch, Porsche says, will be 603 horsepower.
Unusually, Porsche will mount the rear motor behind the rear axle. The company says that move helps the SUV achieve near-50/50 weight distribution.
The Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) system will reportedly be available with air or mechanical suspension. The air-powered version will automatically lower at high speeds to achieve better aerodynamics. Torque vectoring and a rear-wheel steering system will be available as well.
The gasoline-powered Macan will reportedly remain in production for at least 18 months alongside its electric replacement. The company does not plan to go all-electric — having said there may never be an electric 911 — but hopes to be carbon neutral by 2030.
