BMW told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that, “During replacement of the cabin air filter, a housing cover screw could damage the wiring harness,” on affected vehicles.
BMW warns that if the A/C wiring harness is damaged, it could spark a fire or cause a “thermal event.”
After investigating several “field incidents in which thermal events were noted.” Engineers discovered the problem was likely due to routine maintenance during the cabin air filter replacement. BMW is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this problem.
According to the report, BMW dealers will inspect “the air conditioning system’s electrical wiring harness and, if necessary, replace it, and a retaining strap/bracket will be attached to the harness.”
Owners of affected vehicles will be notified by mail beginning April 13, 2026.
