Volkswagen has issued a recall for about 143,000 SUVs because their front passenger airbags might not deploy in an accident.
The recall applies to the following:
- 2018-2021 Volkswagen Atlas
- 2020 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport
Volkswagen tells federal safety officials that the sensor that detects whether the front passenger seat is occupied can develop a wiring problem over time. It can then fail to detect a passenger, in which case the airbag would not deploy in an accident.
The good news for owners is that should the problem develop, VW says the car will warn the driver through “illumination of the airbag warning light, an acoustic warning sound, an error message displayed in the instrument cluster and by the status of the Passenger Airbag OFF indicator light.”
If you think you’ve already brought your Volkswagen in to have this issue repaired, you’re probably thinking of a separate recall. VW recalled many Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport SUVs last year for a problem that could keep the side airbags from deploying.
Volkswagen is still working out a remedy for the problem. When it comes, the repair will be free.
Recall repairs are always free.
