Recall Alert: Tesla Model 3, Y, Recalled Due to Seatbelt Problems

Tesla has issued a pair of safety recalls, both concerning potential seatbelt defects in Model 3 sedans and Model Y SUVs.

The first recall covers about 5,500 2018-2020 Model 3s and 2019-2021 Model Ys. In documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Tesla says “one or both fasteners that secure the front seat shoulder belt to the b-pillar may not be properly attached” in these cars.

The second recall affects about 2,100 Model Y SUVs from model years 2019-2021. In these cars, Tesla says, “one or both fasteners that secure the left and right second row seat belt retractors may not be properly attached.”

Improperly secured seatbelts and seatbelt retractors could increase the risk of injury in an accident. In both cases, Tesla believes the issue could affect just 1 percent of the recalled cars. But dealers must inspect them all. The company is not aware of any crashes or injuries related to the problems.

Dealers will inspect the cars and replace the fasteners if necessary. Recall repairs are always free.

Automakers recall many cars, often several times during their useful lifespan. Automakers attempt to contact owners to ask them to bring the cars in for repair. But they typically don’t reach everyone. It’s not unusual for owners to be driving recalled cars and unaware of any problems. Find out if your car has ever been recalled at our recall center.
