Tesla is recalling about 6,000 Model 3 sedans from model years 2019 through 2021, as well as Model Y SUVs from model years 2020 and 2021. The vehicles may have loose brake caliper bolts. Tesla believes that only about 1% of the recalled cars have the problem, but it must inspect all the vehicles to find those with the issue.
In a document filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Tesla explains, “if a fastener becomes loose enough or separates” from the wheel knuckle “such that the caliper makes contact with the inner surface of the wheel rim, the wheel may be prevented from freely rotating, which may cause loss of tire pressure and may increase the risk of a crash.”
Drivers could hear a scraping noise if the problem develops. The company is not aware of any crashes or injuries associated with the problem.
The vehicles’ bolts will be inspected and tightened or replaced as necessary.
Recall repairs are always free. Automakers recall many cars more than once in their useful lifespan. Though manufacturers try to reach every owner, some slip through the cracks. That leaves millions of cars on the road with unrepaired defects. To find out whether your car is one of them, check the easy VIN tool at our recall center.
