Recall Alert: Tesla Model 3

Tesla has issued a recall alert for about 48,000 Model 3 Performance sedans because their speedometers can fail to display units (mph or kph). The problem occurs only in track mode.

Tesla says the problem was discovered in its own testing, and it’s aware of no accidents related to the display. In compliance with federal law, it will notify owners of the defect. But they don’t need to bring the cars in for repair. The company has already pushed out an over-the-air software update to fix it.

Until last year, Tesla frequently pushed out software updates to fix small issues without notifying owners or the federal government. Regulators from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration pushed Tesla to treat these issues as formal recalls to comply with the law. The company now routinely files recall paperwork for software updates that address even minor safety issues.

Recall repairs are always free.

Many cars are recalled to fix safety defects, sometimes more than once. While automakers try to reach every owner to ask them to bring the vehicle in for repair, they rarely reach them all. Millions of vehicles on American roads need free recall repairs. To find out if your car is one of them, check the easy VIN tool at our recall center.
