Recall Alert: Mercedes EQS, S-Class

2023 Mercedes-EQ EQS in silver.Mercedes-Benz is recalling about 7,500 EQS electric sedans from model year 2022 and S-Class sedans from model year 2023 because a software problem can disable many of their safety systems and even leave their digital speedometers blank.

In documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Mercedes explains that a software defect can cause the cars’ electronic stability programs (ESP) to detect a failure that hasn’t happened. “When the issue occurs, various warning messages and warning lamps would be shown in the instrument cluster to alert the driver.”

The anti-lock brake system, slip regulator, electronic brake force distribution system, and other safety-related programs can all fail because of the defect. That leaves the car drivable but changes the way it behaves. That could contribute to an accident.

Dealers will update the ESP to fix the problem. As always with recalls, the repair is free.

Automakers recall many cars during their lifespan, often more than once. Automakers try to contact every owner but don’t always reach them all. Find out whether your vehicle has any outstanding recalls with the easy VIN tool at our recall center.
