Mercedes-Benz is recalling 10 vehicles from model years 2019 through 2021. Dealers need the cars back to fix a defect that could shut down the backup camera.
Affected models include the A-Class; CLA; CLS; E-Class sedan, coupe, and convertible; GLA; GLB; GLC; GLE; GLS; and the AMG GT-Class 4-door Coupe.
The glitch appears to be a software problem. In documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Mercedes explains, “Under very specific conditions, the MBUX multimedia system might not start, and the display might remain black, or could reboot unintentionally after 50 seconds of initial startup. Accordingly, the rearview camera image might not be displayed or the display might be interrupted which could increase risk of a crash or injury.”
Dealers will install new software to fix the problem. A small number of the cars can receive this update over the air. Most will need to return to the dealership for the update, but it should be a fairly quick process.
