Mercedes has issued a recall for about 5,300 Mercedes-AMG SL convertibles from model years 2022-2023 because they can suddenly lose drive power.
The company tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that factory workers may have routed the wiring harness for the starter/alternator incorrectly, and it may be able to contact the drive shaft. Such contact can cause wear to the harness, leading to a short circuit that could cut all propulsion.
“The driver will not receive a warning due to the nature of the failure mechanism,” Mercedes says. Mercedes knows of six “warranty claims and field reports” related to the problem but no accidents or injuries.
Dealers will fix the problem by securing the harness with a cable tie to eliminate potential contact with the drive shaft.
