BMW has recalled about 61,000 vehicles because of faulty sunroof programming.
Federal law allows the use of a remote key fob to control the opening and closing of a sunroof, but only if the key fob is near the car -– a safety measure to prevent owners from accidentally leaving a child or pet in an unventilated car. BMW has discovered that many of its cars allow the owners to close the sunroof from the key fob from farther away than the law allows.
Dealers can fix the problem with a quick software update. But many of the recalled models can’t receive the update remotely, so drivers will need to bring them in for what should be a very quick appointment. There is never a charge for recall repairs.
The list of recalled models includes some, but not all examples of the:
- 2022 4 Series Gran Coupe
- 2019-2022 X5 and X5M
- 2020-2022 X6 and X6M
- 2019-2023 X7, X7M, and Alpina XB7.
