Ford is recalling about 185,000 2021-2022 F-150 pickups due to a defect that could cause their driveshafts to break.
The F-150 is America’s best-selling vehicle, sold in dozens of configurations. This recall applies to Crew Cab trucks with a 145-inch wheelbase and optional sound insulation package.
Some underbody sound insulation panels may not have been properly attached and can loosen during driving. That doesn’t cause a problem by itself – Ford sells plenty of F-150s without sound insulation. But loose insulation panels can contact the driveshaft, causing heat and unpredictable wear.
In documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Ford explains, “Over time, the aluminum driveshaft may fracture due to heat build-up and/or material thickness reduction.”
Owners might notice the insulation panels hanging below the truck or hear clicking as they bounce against other body parts.
Ford dealers will install new attachments to hold the noise insulation in place, inspect the driveshaft, and repair any damage.
