Following a complete renovation that required 14 months and roughly $95 million to complete, the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles reopened to the public. Now wreathed in road-like ribbons of stainless steel that wrap a building finished in "Hot Rod Red," the expanded 95,000 square-foot multi-story facility boasts leading-edge technologies to celebrate the role the automobile has played in shaping the world as well as how it will continue to impact both design trends and technology.

Intended to serve as a multi-modal, multi-media destination point, the Petersen plays host to 25 galleries that showcasing 100 significant production, competition and concept vehicles from every era and country. These main displays will be regularly refreshed with vehicles from the Petersen’s own vault as well as with many on loan from other major world auto collections. Rounding out the mix are historic automotive art and memorabilia pieces plus cars that featured prominently in movies and television.

While vehicle’s like the stunning 1936 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic Coupe, 1955 Mercury D-528 Concept, Steve McQueen’s 1956 Jaguar XKSS and the 1959 Chevrolet Corvette XP-87 Stingray Racer reflect the historic character and quality of what visitors can expect to find on the floor at any moment, the Petersen also features interactive areas that present a look at what lies ahead. These include a working classroom from the famed Art Center College of Design, and an Alternative Power exhibit. Younger auto aficionados can learn about the tech side of the automobile in the kid-friendly Pixar Cars Mechanical Institute while hot shoes in training can spend time in numerous virtual competition machines — including the new 2017 Ford GT at Le Mans – when visiting the Forza Motorsport Racing Experience.
