Nissan Recalls 443,000 Over Engine Failure

Nissan and its Infiniti luxury marque have recalled 443,899 vehicles that can suffer engine failure due to manufacturing defects. All of the recalled cars have turbocharged 3- or 4-cylinder engines.

The company says that a manufacturing defect in certain bearings “or supporting engine components may cause engine damage and potentially lead to engine failure.”

Bearing failures happen gradually, Nissan says, so owners might see “multiple forms of audible and visible advance warnings, including abnormal noise from the engine compartment, rough running, malfunction indicator lights (MIL), and warning messages in the instrument cluster.”

Dealers will inspect the cars’ oil for metal debris. If they find it, they will replace the entire engine. If they don’t find debris, they will change the oil and may reprogram the engine control module to try to prevent future problems.
