With over 50,000 examples on the road globally since its 2011 launch, the Nissan LEAF is the world’s best-selling electric vehicle. However, its total volume numbers have yet to come close to Nissan‘s original projections for this revolutionary EV. With the arrival of the new, more-capable, less-expensive and now made-in-America 2013 LEAF models, it appears that situation could be about to change. In March, the first full month when cars built in the automaker’s Smyrna, Tennessee, facility were on sale here, LEAF sales reached a heady 2,236 units – 1,657 more than in the same period last year and more than triple the numbers it recorded in January and February.
Like most other auto manufacturers, Nissan enjoyed exceptional sales success in March. In fact, with 137,726 vehicles out the door, it stands as the best single-month total ever for Nissan North America. That said, the stunning leap for LEAF reflected the greatest percentage increase by any vehicle in Nissan’s U.S. lineup. With its improved technical efficiency, shorter charging time and the introduction of a new and more affordable LEAF S model for 2013, this could finally be the year when Nissan’s initial 20,000-unit annual sales bogey finally gets realized.
