NHTSA Car Seat Finder Tool helps parents make the safest choices

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently released its new Car Seat Finder Tool that’s designed to help every parent select the car seat or booster seat that will be able to provide the greatest level of protection for their children. NHTSA points out the critical importance of choosing – and always using — the proper size and type of seat on every trip, noting that every 34 seconds a child under 13 is involved in a crash and that over a third of the young people who die in vehicle crashes were not in car seats or wearing seat belts at the time. It also stresses the need to properly install and register these potentially life-saving devices.

Available online at www.safercar.gov, the new Car Seat Finder Tool offers a wealth of information on every aspect of child car seats, from defining types and selecting the best for any size youngster to ease-of-use ratings and videos that show the correct procedures for mounting one in any vehicle. The site also allows parents to easily register the seats to ensure timely notification regarding any recalls or other advisories.

"Safety is our highest priority, and our new tool and registration campaign are two more ways we’re working to protect our most vulnerable passengers – our children," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx. "Parents and caregivers are the first line of defense by ensuring they are selecting the right car seat, registering it, and using it correctly for every trip."
