Mini this week announced that it will continue to build a convertible for the foreseeable future. And release a redesigned ragtop in 2025. The announcement may seem a bit strange. But, with many automakers pulling out of the convertible market, Mini apparently felt the need to reassure fans.
“The development of a successor to the only open-top 4-seater in the premium small car segment is a done deal. The new model is scheduled to be unveiled in 2025,” the company said.
The company did not say whether the planned 2025 model will carry an internal combustion engine or be electric. Mini has previously announced plans to be an all-electric brand by 2030, so we don’t expect to see more than one more generation of gas-powered Mini droptops.
New Model Recently Unveiled
The Mini Convertible gets a refresh for the 2022 model year. Outside, it sees a larger grille with a body-color bumper cover. It’s a minor change but makes the car look radically different from the 2021 model. LED headlights are now standard at every trim level, as are Union Jack taillights. Inside, it gets a new 8.8-inch touchscreen and 6-color-selectable ambient lighting.
And, as Mini’s press release indicates, it’s just about the only way to get a 4-seat convertible in America for less than $35,000. Open-top muscle cars like the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro, or off-roaders like the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco are the only other drop-top options anywhere near its price range. All are very different vehicles. If you want taut handling in a road car with a ragtop and seating for four, you’re buying a Mini.
Perhaps that’s why Mini feels the need to reassure its followers. “The Mini Convertible has a large and particularly loyal fan base. This is also shown by the great demand for the latest, freshly updated model,” said Bernd Körber, Head of the Mini brand. “We are therefore firmly convinced of the success of this vehicle concept for the future.”
