Unveiled this week at the 2012 Monaco Yacht Show, the Mercedes-Benz Granturismo reflects a collaborative effort between the design wing of the German luxury automaker and British-based Silver Arrows Marine. Envisioned to move the genre into new territory from both a visual and functional perspective, this elegant 14-meter craft is set to reach the market in 2013 – some 125 years after Gottlieb Daimler created the first motorized boat and went cruising on the Neckar River in Germany.
Relying on the skills of world-renowned marine architects Martin Francis and Tommaso Spadolini along with a host of other industry heavyweights, the Mercedes-Benz Granturismo promises to be fully capable of everything from brief harbor outings to extended overnight trips. Cabin appointments will reflect the kind of premium experience buyers have come to expect from Mercedes-Benz automobiles and while no mention was made of what engines will power the Granturismo, expect the power output number to be equally impressive.
"Giving shape to a boat was an exciting challenge for automotive designers like we are," said Gorden Wagener, Head of Design Mercedes-Benz Cars, at the presentation in Monaco. "Our task was to explore how to apply the Mercedes-Benz design language to the particular proportions and specific requirements of a boat. We wanted to create something special and what we have come up with is indeed unique. The ‘Silver Arrow of the seas’ embodies pure emotion and stands for luxury, style and pleasure."
