Mercedes-Benz has recalled 33,456 vehicles because their glass sunroof panels can detach and fall off in traffic.
Recalled models include some, but not all, examples of the:
- 2001-2007 Mercedes-Benz C-Class, including some AMG models
- 2003-2009 Mercedes-Benz CLK, including some AMG models
- 2006-2011 Mercedes-Benz CLS, including some AMG models
- 2003-2009 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, including some AMG models
The company tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that “the bonding between the glass sunroof panel and the sliding roof frame might not meet specifications.” A supplier changed the process for bonding the materials during production, resulting in some cars with a weakening bond and others without.
The seal can degrade over time. “As a consequence, a separation of the glass panel from the vehicle cannot be ruled out.”
Drivers might notice increased wind noise around the sunroof as the problem develops, Mercedes says.
“As a precautionary measure, an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer will check the glass panel bonding on the affected vehicles and replace the sliding roof, if necessary,” the company says.
By law, dealers never charge for recall repairs.
