Presenting what it claims is the most advanced headlamp system ever, Mercedes-Benz has shown a new high-definition Digital Light package. Beyond outstanding dazzle-free illumination that optimizes the shape and direction of the beams themselves, this headlight technology also incorporates digital LED lamps that serve as projectors capable of casting virtual light images onto the roadway to indicate things like missing road signs or potential hazards as well as crosswalk indicators.
Unveiled in 2015 on its F 015 research vehicle and currently being developed in two forms for near-future production models, the HD Digital Light system also is destined to play a role in M-B’s autonomous vehicles. It relies an array of cameras and sensors that work in conjunction with a proprietary control algorithm that calculates the real-time brightness and configuration of over 1 million micro-mirrors in each LED headlamp.
